Pier 71 Bar e Cucina is located on the main shopping street in Altona. I'd walked past many times thinking it didn't look that great. In this case looks are definitely deceiving and make sure to try dining here at least once if you live in the area and for weekend trippers to Altona I'd definitely recommend coming here.
Pier 71 Bar e Cucina is probably overlooked as without careful attention to detail it kind of looks average as you walk past. However venture inside and you are transported to what appears to be Lygon St except you don't have to drive all the way there!
Pier 71 Bar e Cucina is a cosy restaurant. Italian all the way it climbs 100% into an Italiana from the past. Black and white photos from Hollywoods golden era, Italian produce and tinned goods stacked to the rafters it definitely manages to transport you to another world.
Pier 71 has lots of the classic Italian cakes with including cannoli Sicilian pastries consisting of tube-shaped shells of fried pastry dough, filled with a sweet, creamy filling containing ricotta, panna cotta, tiramisu and more.
Pier 71 Bar e Cucina offers a classic Italian menu with a range of pizzas and pasta dishes, share plates and even burgers for the not so Italian tastebuds.
Pier 71 Bar e Cucina has something for everyone and you can even stock up on some Italian kitchen staples while you are there.

Pier 71 is our favourite restaurant in Altona. Some places tend to be a bit generic in Altona and Pier 71 stands out from the crowd with its decor, hospitality, quality food, atmosphere and its Italianness! Yes, that's a word.

The words a hidden gem seem a bit of a cliché however I'd walked past Pier 71 multiple times thinking it looked average. Anyway, when we finally visited we had a grat surprise to find something a bit special.

Tina's Dumpling House
Quality Chinese in the suburbs. Often times Chinese restaurants out of the CBD can be a bit average. We are happy to report that Tina's Dumplings bucks this trend and is pretty good and worthy of repeat visits. We like it!

It's a café serving excellent Japanese food a cut above the average and well above many in Melbourne CBD. It's small and pretty basic on the inside but the food is superb.

Birdcage Altona Café
The Birdcage Altona Cafe is a winner. One of the best cafes going in the West. Fantastic food that also looks divine! Well worth the effort driving here if you are looking for a new café to try.

Hecho En Mexico
It's a chain store but that doesn't mean it can't be great. Yes, we love the vibes, the vibrant colours, fun and the food. Plus it's pretty good value as well.
