Sailors Falls to Daylesford Lake Walk

Sailors Falls to Daylesford Lake Walk

The Sailors Falls to Daylesford Lake walk is 6.5km one way, 13km return. This is not a loop walk and you will retread your path on the return journey. The two obvious highlights being Sailors Falls and Daylesford Lake. Sailors Falls is 1 Hr 37 minutes from Melbourne CBD or approximately 112km. You can start at either end although I'd suggest starting at the Sailors Falls end as it is easier to work out the start of the walk compared to starting from Daylesford Lake. The walk is also perfect for a car share doing only a one-way 6.5km walk starting at Sailors Falls. This way the lazy ones can just head straight into Daylesford while the others can enjoy the walk in.

Assuming you start your walk at the Sailors Falls carpark you will immediately get to enjoy the view of Sailors Falls. There are picnic tables and walk information at the carpark. Sailors Falls can run dry or get very low in water level so if you want to see Sailors Falls at its best try and time your visit after rain or during the winter months.

The Sailors Falls walk to Daylesford is well signposted so you shouldn't lose your walk. The walk also crosses paths with the Three Lost Children Walk which feels a bit ominous as you walk past the sign. Don't be put off though. We are in modern times and this is a well frequented and easy to follow walk.

The walk is generally well forested although some bits are a bit boring and dryish although not dry to the level of some gold-mining areas. You have to cross a very small creek but it is nothing major to be worried about. There are some small up and downs along the way but I wouldn't consider this a challenging walk even for people who don't like small inclines and declines.

For a while you appear to walk along a four-wheel drive track. This is where the walk is a bit dry but does make for quite a good photo and is a distinctive part of the walk. The most green and lush areas of the walk are at both ends (Sailors Falls end and Daylesford Lake end). As you approach Daylesford Lake the path becomes more obvious and very easy to follow. You can choose the side of the path to walk along-side the creek although neither is much different from the other.

Overall the Sailors Fall to Daylesford Lake Walk is an okay walk. It does get a bit boring in parts and Sailors Falls themselves are not the grandest. However as a means to get some exercise and as a walk designed to have a perfect pitstop at the half-way point (for a break or better yet lunch) then this walk works really well. Personally I like that breaking the walk into two halves means that the walk isn't too strenuous and also enables the walk to be extended to 13km as most general walks are quite short.
