Russo Estate in Diggers Rest (760-818 Holden Road, Diggers Rest Victoria) is probably off the beaten track for some. However, if you live around Werribee or Caroline Springs it's actually very close. Anyway, around Diggers Rest is a hidden wine area in Melbourne. I talked to the proprietor and rather than work together like say the Yarra Valley or Red Hill they compete among themselves. It's a bit sad as they could all help each other.
Russo Estate has expanded over the years and now you can do a full glamping experience so you can drink up large and stay home safe. Okay, hopefully you'll actually savor the local wines of Russo Estate, subtle flavours and all!
Russo Estate is an active winery so you get to view the local surrounds and country vineyard setting. This wine area is surprisingly close to the western parts of Melbourne so its perfect for a special trip without having to drive for miles.
The vineyard setting is perfect for treating yourself and Russo Estate go out of their way to ensure their meals have exemplary visual appeal. Really you are not going to get better presented food anywhere else in Melbourne. It's really that good.
The food at Russo Estate is contemporary modern. They do make some interesting cooking choices to keep things fresh but personally they do not always come off. They do aim for fantastic quality so that's more of a personal preference thing than any slight on Russo Estate.
A great thing about Russo Estate is it won't break the break. No it's not supercheap and I wouldn't expect it to be. However, for the great quality, the service they provide, the great visual setting, you come away feeling very satisfied.
In a nutshell
Russo Estate is an exceptional restaurant with great service, a beautiful venue with great views and lots of natural sunlight, fantastic food with a fine dining experience, a glamping experience if you feel so inclined, and a great selection of their own wines (and others) and spirits. It's a perfect place if you want to feel special and treat yourself. Highly recommended. We have been to Russo Estate multiple times and look forward to going again soon. Perfect for Westies for its relatively close proximity.
