Mackenzie's Flat to Grahams Dam

Mackenzies Flat to Grahams Dam

The Mackenzies Flat to Grahams Dam is a 3km 1 hour return. From the family friendly Mackenzie's Flat Picnic Ground you can start off a your picnic or begin your walk proper. There are picnic tables, bbq and public toilets at Mackenzie's flat so you can just enjoy the spot if you don't feel like walking. You have nice shelter here and are out of the sun if you are sun averse.

If you don't want to do the walk you are right beside the Lerderderg River so you can still paddle in the river or if more adventurous have a swim. Parks Victoria does not recommend swimming in streams and waterways due to hidden debris, deep cold water and slippery rocks but that doesn't really seem to stop anyone. People have a dip both at Mackenzie's Flat and at Graham's Dam.

Follow the gentle track beside the river upstream from Mackenzies Flat Picnic Area to Grahams Dam. You will encounter minor river crossings but they are definitely on the easy side although I have never been here straight after any significant rain. However in general terms although technically a river, for much of this walk the Lerderderg river is more like a creek. Only after significant rain could I imagine crossing the river/creek being difficult.

During the walk the path does get narrowish but it is never feels unsafe and it doesn't contain any overly steep inclines or declines. You get some nice views of the mountain range at a few points along the walk although you never climb to a summit point.

At one point you get to walk along a cliff face which makes a nice scenic background for a few photo's as well as adding some interest to the walk. At Graham's Dam you will find many people going for a swim as the river here is actually quite wide and sprawling. The walk is well frequented so it is unlikely you will be alone so you will entirely safe on this walk. I regard this walk as beginner friendly due to its general flatness. However you do have to walk on some stepping stones on the few river/creek crossing so if your balance is poor be prepared ahead of time.
