Lauriston Reservoir, nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Victoria, Australia, stands as a testament to the serene beauty and recreational bounty the region has to offer. This expansive water body, surrounded by rolling hills, provides a tranquil oasis for visitors seeking a peaceful retreat from the urban hustle. Note: the landscape is a bit bare but it is what it is. Its pristine waters and well-maintained surroundings make it an ideal destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
Fishing is a popular activity at Lauriston Reservoir, attracting anglers from all over the region. Stocked with several species of fish, including trout and redfin, the reservoir provides ample opportunities for both seasoned fishermen and those looking to try their hand at the sport. The clear, cool waters and the variety of fish available ensure a rewarding experience for anyone casting a line from the shore or a boat.
It's a bit unusual for an area to be so proudly promoting fishing. As keen anglers know, fishing is an enjoyable passtime but guaranteeing a catch is somewhat different. Anyway with all the signs about hopefully there are as many fish as the signs seem to indicate.
Picnicking is another activity that Lauriston Reservoir accommodates wonderfully. With designated picnic areas equipped with tables and barbecue facilities, families and groups can enjoy al fresco dining in a picturesque setting. These areas are thoughtfully placed to maximize views of the reservoir and its lush surroundings, providing a perfect backdrop for a relaxing day out.
There are numerous picnic tables and areas all around Lauriston Reservoir. In fact it's got one of the highest densities of any place we have visited. keep in mind it apparently can get very busy here so time your moment right if its one of those perfect weather days. Timing it right applies to the wind as well. When we were there it was a bit windswept.
Education and History
The reservoir also serves as an educational resource, offering insights into water management and conservation efforts in the region. Informational signage around the area educates visitors on the importance of reservoirs for water supply and environmental sustainability. This educational aspect adds a layer of depth to visits, enriching the experience for those interested in learning more about Victoria's natural resources and conservation efforts.
It's nice to learn more about the local area and it's history. We had a good chat to a semi local who lives down the road in Sunbury. He commented on how the area has changed with all the picnic areas now and also the fishing (Hint: the trout are about early morning and the dusk. In other words its hopeless trying to land a trout during the day!).
Kayaking and canoeing are activities that further enhance the recreational offerings of Lauriston Reservoir. The calm waters of the reservoir are ideal for paddling, offering a serene way to explore the water and surrounding landscapes. This not only provides a peaceful escape but also a unique perspective on the beauty of the area, accessible only from the water.
Tourist for one day
Photographic Opportunities: For photography enthusiasts, the views of the dam make for a great photographic opportunity. There's is always a bit of grandeur to a dam or a weir.
Of course the dam in the background makes for a great selfie opportunity if that is your kind of thing or just to record all the places you have visited.
With a supreme amount of imagination you can imagine yourself at the Hoover Dam or watching James Bond in Golden Eye. Anyway whatever the case it's a great place to take some tourist snaps. Note: The real life memory is somewhat superior to the photographs so if you are in the area we do recommend coming here if you like to have that tourist experience.
Anyway, final selfie. If you love pretending to be a tourist then making your way to Lauriston Reservoir is well worth the quick trip from Kyneton at only 8 minutes drive away.
