Viewfield Open Garden, located in the picturesque Macedon is a horticultural delight that offers visitors an unforgettable journey through meticulously curated landscapes. The garden is a celebration of nature's diversity, showcasing a wide array of plant species that thrive in the region's cool climate.
As you wander through Viewfield, you are greeted by the vibrant colors and fragrant scents of blooming flowers that change with the seasons. The garden is thoughtfully designed to ensure that there's always something in bloom, from the delicate blossoms of spring to the rich hues of autumn. Each pathway and hidden nook reveals carefully arranged plantings that emphasize texture, color, and harmony, inviting visitors to pause and admire the beauty around them.
The garden's standout features include majestic trees that provide a canopy of shade, tranquil water elements that add a sense of serenity, and themed sections that demonstrate gardening at its finest. The dedication of the gardeners is evident in the health and vibrancy of the plants, and their passion for gardening shines through in the creative and innovative designs.
Spanning 10 acres of botanical diversity, Viewfield showcases the distinct character of the Mount Macedon region. Viewfield offers one of Mount Macedon's most impressive autumnal settings and includes many features:
- Majestic European trees;
- stunning views and vistas;
- a fruit forest;
- Constantly changing perennial gardens;
- a working glasshouse;
- Eucalypts;
- Beautiful sparkling stream running through shady fern glades.
Flowers: One of the highlights of Viewfield are the flowers. That might seem to be a strange thing to say but many of the gardens that are available to visit are often very decorative and manicured but don't have an emphasis on flowers or garden beds of flowers.
The abundance of flowers, honey-eater birds and bees and wasps buzzing around are a real delight. If you are a nature enthusiast I'm sure you'll really enjoy and appreciate the abundance of the many garden beds of flowers in their multi-coloured glory.
Creek and stream: Towards the back of Viewfield there is a lovely stream running for a significant length through the property. You can tell much effort has been made by Viewfield to harness this natural feature and make it a standout component of the garden.
Creeks and streams always have their own charm. It is hard for the senses to resist the calming sound as the water runs down, through and over the creek bed and rocks. It is quite a pleasant surprise to find that this creek exists within the garden so I hope we haven't ruined it for you.
Viewfield have managed to make the rear of the property like a mini rainforest and this is a real delight plus it's nice to have a cooler area within the garden as well.
There are quite a few little segments (or breakout areas for want of a better decription) of Viewfield that highlight a particular piece of sculpture or artwork.
There are also quite a few chairs, seats and tables located under trees and other spots throughout the garden to take a mini break or just enjoy and take in the lovely surroundings.
Glasshouse: A glasshouse doesn't sound that exciting but the glasshouse and outside vege garden at Viewfield is definitely a highlight.
The glasshouse doesn't really have a unified theme. It's kinds got a bit of everything but it just works as a feel good kind of space.
The glasshouse has vegetables, gourds, flowers, table and chairs, ferns, potplants, planter boxes, some climbing plants and vines to make an interesting and welcoming space without being particularly manicured.
Indoor vege patch.
Curiosity: There of course is always a personal curiosity as to what's inside the property, be it the gardens, the layout, plants, trees, flowers, sculptures and artworks, materials and even the home itself. This afterall is what drives us to visit these kind of places.
Viewfield in many ways is kind of a down to earth garden. Nothing is particularly ostentatious and for the most part you could even imagine yourself creating such a garden if you ever managed to have a property of its scale.
What is noticeable though is that the Macedon Ranges do make a lovely backdrop to the entire property.
