Moggs Creek Nature Walk: Easy 2km Great Otway National Park Circuit
The Moggs Creek Nature Walk is an easy 2 km circuit starting from Moggs Creek Picnic Area in the Great Otway National Park near Aireys Inlet. Why This Short Moggs Creek Walk Is Worth Stopping For
If you want an easy walk near Aireys Inlet without committing to a long hike, this is a fantastic option. Parks Victoria lists the circuit at 2 km and about 30 minutes, while local tourism information suggests allowing closer to 45 minutes. Either way, it is a compact nature walk that gives you a proper taste of the Otways without taking over your entire day.
The walk begins at Moggs Creek Picnic Area and follows the creek through a quiet valley. The track is well graded and crosses the water on several small wooden bridges. That gentle rhythm of creek, forest and bridge crossings makes the walk feel more interesting than its short distance might suggest, especially if you are visiting with children or simply want a relaxed stroll between longer Great Ocean Road stops.
I love walks like this because they reward you for doing a little bit of research instead of automatically driving past to the next famous lookout. A little bit of research on a holiday to Auckland, New Zealand led me one suburb further than usual and into a new favourite second hand shop.
Moggs Creek has the same kind of energy. It is easy to miss, but making the small detour gives you a completely different experience from the beaches and lookouts along the Great Ocean Road.
Birdlife is one of the big reasons to take your time here. The Nature Walk is rich in birds and native plant life, and the sheltered creek environment makes it a good place to stop, look and listen rather than race around the circuit. The surrounding eastern Otways are also known for impressive plant diversity, so even a short walk can turn into a mini nature photography session.
We were lucky enough to catch a juvenile Spotted Pardalote although truth be told you'll hear a lot more birds than spot them or they'll be so distant you can't really geta good look at them. Still, it is quite noticeable that there are many more birds in the Moggs Creek Nature Walk than the primary Ocean View Circuit Walk.
As someone who enjoys hiking and photography, I would happily bring a light camera such as the OM-5 on this walk. A small prime, macro lens or standard zoom will be useful in capturing the intimate forest details: bark textures, bridges, creek reflections, leaves and little scenes along the track.
However, I'd make sure to pack in a telephoto lens if you are interested in photographing the birdlife. Generally speaking, Moggs Creek Nature walk is the kind of place where slowing down can produce better photos than trying to hunt for one giant hero view.
The Nature Walk can be regarded as relatively easy, with its short duration and minimal ups and downs but normal bushwalking common sense still applies. Wear shoes with decent grip, especially after rain, carry drinking water and supervise children around creek crossings. Conditions in the Otways can change quickly, and fallen branches, wet surfaces and muddy sections are all possible after rough weather.
The picnic area also makes this walk particularly convenient. Parks Victoria information lists picnic tables, toilets, information and car parking at Moggs Creek Picnic Area, so you can easily turn the walk into a picnic stop. That makes it a great family option or a low effort add-on to a day around Aireys Inlet, Fairhaven and Lorne.
This little circuit is a lovely reminder that a Great Ocean Road day does not need to be all big cliffs and famous landmarks. Sometimes a quiet creek walk is all you need to relax and refresh your spirit.
Keep your expectations in check: This is a small walk without any defining, "wow", type of experience. If you appreciate the smaller things or just need a small activity to keep the kids entertained this may be a suitable walk. However for something a bit grander it goes without saying you should be walking the Ocean View Circuit Walk while you are here. Presumably that's why you are here unless you are an unusual traveller.

Getting there
Moggs Creek Picnic Area is at the end of Boyd Avenue, Moggs Creek, near Aireys Inlet. From the Great Ocean Road, turn inland at Moggs Creek, continue via Old Neuk Road and Boyd Avenue, then follow the unsealed access road to the picnic area. The walk starts directly from the picnic area.

- Lorne: A larger Great Ocean Road base with accommodation, food and easy access to more Great Otway National Park walks and waterfalls.
