Horseshoe Bend Farm, nestled in the tranquil suburb of Keilor in Melbourne, is a hidden gem that offers a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The farm, with its picturesque landscapes and serene atmosphere, makes for a perfect family outing. Its sprawling fields and well-maintained pathways invite visitors to explore and reconnect with nature.
WARNING: The farm is no longer operational and this is now a nature park and reserve and is fully open to the public.
Some history: Horseshoe Bend Farm was formerly a commercial farm but is now managed by Parks Victoria. Despite no longer being operational as a farm and not housing any livestock, the site still retains an original 1930s weatherboard cottage. While no longer commercially in operation this is still a great place to visit, go for a stroll, relax or have a picnic.
Picnic Areas: Horseshoe Bend Farm also offers a range of recreational activities. The picnic areas are beautifully set up, providing an ideal setting for a family lunch amidst nature. Be organised and bring your own picnic food and drink. This is a nice relaxing spot plus you can shelter out of the sun as well for the sun conscious.
Recreational walks: For those who love walking, the farm has a few scenic trails that offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including the Maribyrnong River.
If you are fortunate you might even spot a few random kangaroos as you walk along the trails.
The few walking trails are very moderate in length and basically have no major inclines or descents. In other words the walks are achievable even for the most unathletic.
While the scenery isn't what I would call outstanding it is still very nice and has an overall picturesqueness in certain spots. I guess you could call it a pleasant country cottage aesthetic.
Photographic Opportunities: For the creative, the legacy farm equipment throughout the reserve may get your creative juices running and you maybe able to take some innovative and unusual photographs.
Okay these are my efforts at trying to be a bit creative but you get the idea.
Community Garden: There is now a beautiful community garden housed at the rear of the old farm house. This is modernity in the best possible way and I always enjoy looking and admiring the growing efforts of others.
As it stands today: This place, now a tranquil spot for visitors, was once a bustling farm. Over the years, it transitioned into a more public space, offering a unique country-style oasis amid suburban surroundings. The farm includes various features that hark back to its operational days, such as old sheds and stables, a fruit tree orchard, barns, and old farming equipment. It provides opportunities for exploration and leisure with its picnic tables, walking tracks, and proximity to the Maribyrnong River.
