Review: Hecho En Mexico Altona

We had the pleasure of dining at Hecho en Mexico in Altona, Melbourne, and it was nothing short of a vibrant culinary fiesta. From the moment we walked in, the lively atmosphere set the tone for the evening. The décor was a colorful homage to Mexican culture, with bright murals and traditional ornaments adding to the authenticity.

Hecho En Mexico (Altona)

The effort by Hecho En Mexico to really go all in on the Mexican theme is a delight. Life can be dreary at times so going somewhere nice and colourful certainly brightens the soul. It also just puts you in a positive frame of mind and that's got to be a good thing.

Hecho En Mexico (Altona)

The menu offers a tantalizing array of Mexican classics. You have everything from Quesadilla, nachos, Chimichanga, Enchiladas, Fajitas and even Pambazo (a type of Mexican street food). I have to admit that I don't really know the subtlety of Mexican food of they often seem to taste similar but differ in form. Not a complaint just my own personal observation.

Hecho En Mexico (Altona)

The menu offered a tantalizing array of Mexican classics. I started with their homemade guacamole and tortilla chips, which were fresh and flavorful. For the main course, I opted for the Chicken Enchiladas, which were a delightful mix of tender chicken, rich sauce, and just the right amount of cheese. My dining companion enjoyed the Beef Tacos, which he described as “juicy and packed with flavor.”.

Hecho En Mexico has a super extensive beverage menu. There are a number of colourful and attractive cocktails, margaritas, sangria, tequila shots, red and white wine, mocktails, beer, cider and lots more.

Hecho En Mexico (Altona)

If you love your deep fried food then we heartily recommend having the Chimichanga. Chimichanga is a deep fried burrito with Mexican rice, pico de gallo, mint cream w salsa fresca & chipotle aioli with fillings ranging from grilled chicken, shredded beef , chorizo & potato, chilli con carne, pulled pork, frijoles charros (vegetarian) or veggie chilli con carne. You also get to choose the hotness of the salsa (Mild/Medium/Hot).

Hecho En Mexico (Altona)

The service was friendly and attentive without being intrusive. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu and made excellent recommendations.

Hecho En Mexico (Altona)

Hecho En Mexico conveniently has Mexican styled hats that you can try on. Perhaps tacky but great for a selfie and I can imagine with a big group of friends you could have a lot of fun taking a few pix.

Hecho En Mexico (Altona)

As for the price, it was reasonable considering the quality of food and the overall experience. Hecho en Mexico offers a slice of Mexican culture right in the heart of Altona, making it a great spot for both casual dinners and special occasions.

Hecho En Mexico (Altona)

At the rear of the restaurant is a nice openish area that is very chilled out. When the weather is great I imagine this would get quite crowded and with a footy match on very busy even in the winter months (with the heaters on). The effort to keep this area Mexican styled is very cool too.

Hecho En Mexico (Altona)

In a nutshell

In conclusion, Hecho en Mexico is a must-visit for anyone looking to enjoy semi-authentic Mexican cuisine in a lively and welcoming setting. Despite being a chain restaurant Hecho en Mexico is a place where every meal feels like a celebration. I’ll certainly be back for more! Recommended.

Hecho En Mexico (Altona)

Review: del Rios Winery and Restaurant

Del Rios Winery and Restaurant in Anakie offers an exquisite dining experience, blending the allure of fine wines with stunning scenic views. Visitors are treated to a range of options, from a delightful wine selection to a variety of cocktails and sangrias.

del Rios Winery and Restaurant

del Rios Winery and Restaurant has quite a manifesto (see below) so it has a lot to live up to. We happily chatted to Esther del Rio who is quite the conversationalist and definitely added her own personal charm to our lunch.

del Rios Winery and Restaurant

del Rios Winery and Restaurant offers what I would describe as a finedining experience and this is definitely appreciated out on the western edge of Melbourne. The experience here compared to say Rosana Bistro and Bar at the Holiday Inn in Werribee I have to say I preferred the experience at del Rios Winery and Restaurant much more.

del Rios Winery and Restaurant

del Rios Winery and Restaurant has an extensive tapas menu fitting the winery setting. You can expect anything from Bruschetta, Boquerones (pickled white anchovies with toasted bread), Gambas al Ajillo (prawns in creamy garlic sauce), Pulpo a la Gallega (Galician style octopus served with potatoes and bread) and lots more.

del Rios Winery and Restaurant

In other words del Rios Winery and Restaurant is fully committed to its Spanish theme. This is great as it helps del Rios Winery and Restaurant stand out from the crowd, lets you have some unique dishes and helps make your dining experience more memorable.

A common issue I have with restaurants these days is a lack of originality and seemingly many restaurants having almost identical menus. It is nice going somewhere where you can expect something different.

del Rios Winery and Restaurant

del Rios Winery and Restaurant is committed to offering locally made produce that showcases their own farmed Scottish Angus Beef and Texel Freissian lambs. You can expect anything from Carne de res (succulent slow-cooked estate-grown beef served with jus and baked potatoes), Cordero (estate grown lamb served with jus and baked potatoes), Bistec, steak (premium pasture fed porterhouse steak), Calamar Frito (calamari served with rocket salad) and more.

del Rios Winery and Restaurant

You can accompany your mains with a selection ranging from hand cut potatoes in Spanish tomato sauce, grilled broccolini with chilli and Jerez vinegar, Ensalada (seasonal salad), Pan (fresh bread served with homemade whipped butter) and classic chips.

del Rios Winery and Restaurant

Perhaps a small letdown is their rather subdued dessert menu. I guess that means you should top up on some extra wine! Befitting its Spanish theme you can have traditional Spanish churros served with a dipping sauce of your choice, Spanish almond cake or maybe a Spanish crème brúlée.

Winemaking

Nestled in the scenic Moorabool Valley, the Anakie Vineyard sits gracefully on the slopes of an extinct volcano. This unique location blesses the vineyard with rich red volcanic soils, complemented by an enriched limestone base. These fertile grounds, steeped in geological history, provide a robust foundation for the vineyard, lending distinct characteristics to the wines produced here.

del Rios Winery and Restaurant

The cool climate of the region plays a crucial role in shaping the vineyard's output. It contributes to the creation of wines that are not only elegant and refined but also possess a unique ruggedness. This distinct quality is a nod to the vineyard's ancient past, reflecting the enduring legacy of its volcanic origins in every bottle.

del Rios Winery and Restaurant

In a nutshell

del Rios Winery and Restaurant is one of our favourite restaurants in the outer west. A lovely location and an extensive selection of wine, beers, cider, sangria and more including their own locally produced wines. A Spanish and contemporary modern styled food menu using local seasonal produce and their own farmed Scottish angus beef and Texel Friesian cross lamb del Rios Winery and Restaurant offers a finedining experience with great hospitality and very fair pricing. Highly recommended.

Restaurant Review: Mama Lor (Werribee)

Mama Lor is a Filipino restaurant in Werribee that offers a variety of traditional Filipino dishes as well as their unique Spanish styled bread, cakes and treats.

Mama Lor

Mama Lor is located on the Watton high street and is a nice modern, open and bright restaurant. I guess you could say it is bamboo inspired (at least colour wise). While brownish tones generally remind you of the 1970's and early 1980's the design really works for Mama Lor and it actually looks quite contemporary. Thumbs up for their interior design as this is quite an attractive restaurant.

Mama Lor

Mama Lor has lots of unique dishes if you are not of Filipino descent or don't have Fiipino friends. This is one of the big selling points of Mama Lor as Filipino food just isn't that common. We have been to Mama Lor multiple times and it is always nice to have food that isn't so familiar.

Mama Lor

The Mama Lor menu is very extensive and has an array of starters including Lumpiang Shanghai and Lumpiang Gulay (different types of spring rolls), eggplant salad (ensaladang talong), deep fried tofu and pork belly (tokwa't Baboy), Filipino fried chicken. They also have a number of vegetable dishes including pinakbet (mixed vegetables sauteed with shrimp paste), ampalaya, tortang talong (grilled eggplant salad) and more.

Mama Lor

Mama Lor also has lots of great authentic Filipino mains including inihaw na liempo (charcoal grilled pork belly), bbq grilled pork skewers, lechon kawali (a classic pork belly dish deep fried until perfectly golden), kare kare, and cispy pata (pork hock bolied until tender then deep-fried until golden crisp). If you love pork then Mama Lor should be on the top of your list!

Mama Lor

Mama Lor doesn't rest on its pork laurels and has plenty of seafood, chicken, soups, noodles, sizzling dishes and even a few seeming oddities like spaghetti pasta!. The Mama Lor menu really is very extensive and one of the best going around. We have only touched the surface here.

Mama Lor

Mama Lor also has a huge and great range of freshly baked Spanish inpired cakes and breads you can buy takeaway. We've bought quite a few and it makes it a bit special buying that something on the way out or just by themselves. Hopia ube flaky pastry with purple yam is a classic as is hopia monggo (flaky pastry with mung beans). They also have torta cebuana (a sweet and tangy butter cake), ube pandesal and lots more).

In a nutshell

Mama Lor is one of the best restaurants in Werribee. From great modern distinctive interior design, an extensive selection of unique and great tasting Filipino cuisine, to freshly baked cakes and breads and a great vibe as they continue to be one of the busiest restaurants in Werribee, Mama Lor is definitely recommended.

Mama Lor is located at 187 Watton St, Werribee VIC 3030. On the main shopping and dining street in Werribee, Mama Lor is very easy to find.
