Altona Homestead

Altona Homestead

Situated in the tranquil seaside suburb of Altona, the Altona Homestead offers visitors a unique window into early colonial life in Melbourne. Originally built in the 1840s, this historic building is more than just a preserved structure; it's a storybook of the region's evolution.

Historical Significance

The homestead, initially the residence of the Langhorne family, stands as one of the earliest homes built in the area. Its architecture, while modest, is a testament to the colonial designs of its era, with its wide verandahs and high ceilings designed for the Australian climate.

A popular attraction within the homestead is the Logan's Tea Room. Visitors can relish a traditional Devonshire tea, complete with scones, jam, and cream, all while enjoying the vintage setting of the tea rooms.

WARNING: The Devonshire Tea is only available on the first Sunday of the month and bookings are required.

Rotating Exhibitions

There is always an Exhibition to view, a new journey into history. The exhibitions are temporary so you can visit the Altona Homestead again in the future and expect something new to view and learn from. This is great for Western Suburbaners who can come again for the Devonshire Tea but still get a new experience each time.

Gardens and Surrounds

The gardens surrounding the homestead are beautifully manicured and provide a peaceful space to relax and soak in the historical ambience. Plus, its proximity to Altona Beach offers an added incentive for a leisurely stroll post-visit or dining out at one of the seaside eateries.

Inside Altona Homestead

Thanks to the Laverton & Altona Historical Society you can enjoy wandering through the Altona Homestead, see historic artifacts and furniture of the time and literally be transported back in time. The homestead isn't particularly large but there are still enough rooms to maintain your interest as well as showcase the rotating exhibitions.

The historic map of Altona is interesting as Altona literally seems so empty and is still filled with grass fields and pasture. Times have definitely changed. While Altona isn't what I would call bustling it has definitely filled out and there are no longer any empty areas.
