Nestled in the You Yangs region of Victoria, Australia, Serendip Sanctuary is a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts, wildlife lovers, and families seeking a serene escape. Located just an hour's drive from Melbourne, the sanctuary offers an authentic Australian bushland experience with a rich diversity of flora and fauna.

The sanctuary is an excellent educational resource. It hosts interactive displays and informative signage that explain the region's ecosystems and conservation efforts. Educational tours and programs are also available, making it a valuable destination for school groups and curious minds of all ages.

Highlights:

- For the young at heart: Some sections of the park are especially designed to keep the kids entertained.

The facility is purpose built to allow you to get as close as possible to the birdlife. It pays to be quiet so not to scare the birds and animals away. The enclosed sections add to the excitement for the kids and make the sanctuary stand-out from many other parks.

A few novelty type educational signposts and activities will help keep the kids entertained while you are here.

Conservation Efforts
As a managed nature reserve, Serendip Sanctuary plays a vital role in local conservation efforts. It focuses on breeding programs for endangered species and habitat restoration projects. Visitors can learn about these initiatives and how they contribute to broader environmental conservation goals.

Highlights:
- Conservation Programs: Gain insights into efforts to preserve local wildlife and habitats, including breeding programs for species like the eastern barred bandicoot.
- Volunteer Opportunities: Engage with ongoing projects through volunteer programs, adding a meaningful dimension to your visit.

Animals
For many though the main reasons to visit will be the picnic areas, walks and the animals. The park has enclosed areas as well as quite open areas almost like an open range zoo. Because of this you may be quite far away from some animals so it pays to keep your expectations reasonable.

I wouldn't call the Serendip Sanctuary overflowing with animals. It's more at a level of just enough to keep you entertained. This is a FREE sanctuary afterall so that's fair enough and given the quality of the facilities it's all good.
In general terms the wildlife is focused on birdlife first and foremost and then you have wallabies, kangaroos (didn't see any but apparently they are here as well) and emus.

Location
The Serendip Sanctuary is located at 100 Windermere Rd, Lara VIC 3212 or 50 minutes drive from Melbourne CBD.

If living in Werribee then Serendip Sanctuary is only 26 minutes drive away.
When
Serendip Sanctuary is open every day from 8.00am-4.00pm, but is closed on Christmas Day and Good Friday.
In A Nutshell
Serendip Sanctuary stands out as a premier destination for anyone interested in Australia's natural beauty and wildlife. Its rich biodiversity, educational offerings, scenic trails, and commitment to conservation make it a must-visit for nature lovers and families. Whether you're an avid bird watcher, a casual walker, or a family looking for a day out, Serendip Sanctuary offers a rewarding and enriching experience that highlights the best of the You Yangs' natural charm.
Family Friendly is perfect for family looking for a day out or informal visit for a picnic lunch or casual wildlife walkabout. It is especially family friendly being FREE with toilet facilites and may tables available. The kids thankfully are easier to please than adults so the animals while not super plentiful should be enough to keep them entertained as well as providing a learning experience.
