Westgate Park Saltwater Lakes, we'll just call it the Pink Lakes in Port Melbourne is a lake that turns a vibrant hue of pink under the right conditions. It's a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, especially when the lake is at its pinkest, typically during the warmer months.
For Westies we typically see the Pink Lakes when driving over the Westgate Bridge when heading into the city.
The Pink Lakes turn pink due to a combination of high salt levels, high temperatures, sunlight, and a lack of rainfall. For the technically inclined the pink colour is the result of a chemical reaction involving algae, halobacteria, and the high salinity of the water. When these conditions align, they promote the growth of a certain algae – Dunaliella salina and a type of halobacteria, Halobacterium. These microorganisms produce carotenoids (a type of pigment) which give the lake its pink color.
The pink hue is not permanent. The best time to see the pink lake is typically during the warmer months, from late summer to early autumn, when the conditions mentioned above are just right. However, it's worth noting that the color can change rapidly, and the lake might not always be pink even during these periods. This is why you should rush down to the lake when it is pink. It doesn't last forever!
At the Pink Lake there are walking and cycling paths throughout the park. The park itself is a serene place to relax, with beautiful urban wetlands, native plantings, and birdwatching opportunities. There are signs and viewing platforms at the pink lake to help visitors learn more about the phenomenon and view it.
Always ensure you have plenty of water and sun protection, as these areas can be very hot and exposed. Also during the hot summer months be wary of snakes as this is their territory.
Over the years, photos of the pink lake have become more and more popular on social media. The once relatively unknown Pink Lakes have become a unique Melbourne attraction.
