Castlemaine Gaol is officially closed (as at August 2024) so you can no longer enter the premises.
Still a great place to enjoy: However, we believe that if you have never visited and have the time available that it is still worth your time visiting Castlemaine Gaol. A visit in this sense means walking around the Castlemaine Gaol perimeter, enjoying the posters, outdoor sculptures, view overlooking Castlemaine and maybe even having a picnic lunch.
Walking around the perimeter of Castlemaine Gaol the gaol itself makes quite the striking appearance. For this alone we believe it is worth coming here. It's like a mini castle although obviously it served an entirely different purpose. It's just sad that Bromley has ceased operations here.
As it stands, Castlemaine Gaol still provides some quite good selfie opportunites as you walk outside and the "ART" lettering is almost perfect for this purpose.
Although you can no longer go inside the Castlemaine Gaol you can still get a small reminder of Bromley's artwork with the many posters still adorning the exterior of the gaol.
These posters are fairly numerous and as you walk around the perimeter of the gaol will help maintain interest. They are quite vibrant and decent in scale so you can easily appreciate them.
Even though we couldn't go inside Castlemaine Gaol we really enjoyed the walk around the gaol. The gaol itself is decent enough in size that it makes it worth while having a walk around and due to the gaol's elevated position within Castlemaine you do get a nice view looking down over the township.
The side of the Castlemaine Gaol looking over the town includes a declining embankment with a number of Bromley's sculptures. This also makes a great picnic spot as long as you visit here on a day when the sun is shining.
Bromley Scultputres: The sculptures have that distinctive Bromley look and also provide you with another opportunity to take more selfies if that takes your fancy.
Get Elevated: The view from the Castlemaine Gaol overlooking the town really makes it worth coming up here to the gaol. As a visitor to Castlemaine you will likely not enjoy this view if you just stay down in the town centre and do the usual things.
The Castlemaine Gaol makes quite a striking structure. If you re-imagine it as a castle it's actually quite grand looking.
Despite no longer being able to venture inside Castlemaine Gaol it is still a really nice spot to visit.
Location
Castlemaine Gaol is located at 36-48 Bowden St, Castlemaine VIC 3450.
When
Closed to the public permanently but you can walk around the gaol perimeter and enjoy the sculpture garden areas all year round.
In A Nutshell
Castlemaine Gaol with it's nice elevated position and small outdoor Bromley sculpture garden makes a perfect spot for a picnic lunch and enjoying the view across Castlemaine.
Enjoy walking around Castlemaine Gaol while you are here and take in a bit of history.
