Mount Towrong Vineyard, nestled in the serene landscapes of the Macedon Ranges in Australia, is a not so hidden gem that deserves every bit of praise it receives. This boutique vineyard, with its breathtaking views and tranquil surroundings, offers a unique and intimate wine-tasting experience that is both enriching and memorable. From the moment you step onto the property, the beauty of Mount Towrong captivates you, making it clear that you're in for something special.
Upon arrival, visitors are immediately drawn to the estate's picturesque setting. The winery, perched on a ridge overlooking the rolling hills of Kyneton, offers breathtaking views that encapsulate the beauty of Victoria's countryside. The welcoming entrance leads to a tasting room where warmth and friendliness abound, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience.
Perched at an elevation of 600 metres, with unobstructed vistas of both Mount Macedon and Mount Towrong, Mount Towrong Vineyard thrives in a cool climate setting. It benefits from the moderate rainfall that each season brings, enhancing the quality of its grapes.
Sustainability and the Environment: Mount Towrong Vineyard has implemented terraces within the vineyard enabling them to fully utilize the gentle inclines, and through the adoption of sustainable farming practices are cultivating premium grapes at a limited yield. Mount Towrong Vineyard farm employing organic composts, strictly avoiding any pesticides or herbicides.
The remnants of winter pruning are recycled back into the soil between rows. Additionally, all vines undergo cane pruning, and the grapes are harvested by hand, ensuring meticulous care and attention to detail.
If these values align with yours you have even greater reason to support their winery should you find a wine or two to your liking.
Wine Tasting: .One of the standout features of Mount Towrong is its exceptional range of wines. Each bottle tells a story of the vineyard's dedication to quality and the meticulous care that goes into cultivating the grapes. The vineyard specializes in Italian varietals, which are not only unique in the region but also a testament to the owner's heritage and passion for winemaking.
If you are expecting your wines to have classic names like Cabernet Merlot, Shiraz, Malbec, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, etc, you will have quite the shock with all the Italian names and no real reference point. Expect to see wines by the name of Vermentino, Gialla, Lagrein, Vivace, Nebbiolo and the like. It does make your wine tasting experience somewhat different and I actually enjoyed that point of difference. It's somewhat unique not really knowing what to expect with each wine you try.
We really enjoyed our wine tasting and our host George although very busy was still able to be very informative and friendly. He even obliged us this selfie with him. Cudos George!
Dining and menu: Mount Towrong Vineyard has an Italian themed menu they manage to fit onto a single page. While that may seem restrictive I am a fan of limited one page menu's and the skill it takes to have enough variety to satisfy customers with this kind of limitation.
Unfortunately we didn't have the opportunity to dine on this particular experience so will not comment on the dining experience or the quality other than to provide a quick rundown of the menu. Italian classic entrees such as bread with olive oil, marinated olives. Local salame, pickled fennel or Mortadella with radish and ricotta.
Larger dishes such as Smoked whipped trout, spring onions, crispy bread; Pan fried sardines, pine nut stuffing, escabeche; Fennel & chilli spiralled sausage, salsa verde, spanish onions; Half roast chicken, yellow squash & zucchini purée. Some desserts such as Cheese, house preserve, lavosh, fruit bread; Rice pudding with poached rhubarb and balsamic walnuts; Olive oil cake with macerated strawberries and mascarpone.
Anyway, it all sounds pretty enticing and a bit different too. I appreciate this somewhat different menu as after a while lots of restaurants seems to have an almost generic menu. Brownie points from us for their differentiation. Really appreciated.
We personally bought two bottles of the Grenache. I am no Grenache expert so cannot comment as to the quality. However, the vanilla and clove notes were somewhat unique to me and enough to make it buy for us.

In A Nutshell
In conclusion, Mount Towrong Vineyard is a lovely small scale winery harnessing environmentally sustainable practices as well as providing a cool wine tasting environment and being a trendy cafe/restaurant to boot.
Combined with an Italian history and style of wine-making the wines are unique and taste great. Our personal recommendation is the Grenache. If you love cool climate wines then make sure you add Mount Towrong Vineyard to your list of must visit wineries. If you love dining out then come here for the lovely surroundings and take a break from humdrum suburbia.
TIP: If you are intending to have lunch make a booking ahead of time to avoid disappointment. Mount Towrong Vineyard is busy all year round so make the best of your time.
TIP 2: Love wine? Take a trip to Mt Macedon Winery and make a day of it. Hint drive through Macedon Regional Park via Mount Macedon Road, Douglas Road and Bawden Road and shave 10-15 minutes off the drive to Mt Macedon Winery from Mount Towrong Vineyard. Note: Google maps will take you on a circuitous drive taking much longer so take this shortcut.
