Hanging Rock

Hanging Rock

The Hanging Rock in Heathcote-Graytown National Park is a nice 3.5 km walk taking approximately 2 hours to complete. The walk is moderately steep in places so it is advised to have good walking shoes or boots and rises to about 300m.

The Hanging Rock circuit is quite open so wear plenty of sunblock and a decent hat. The terrain is dry, rocky and a bit scrubby. As a loop walk it's great that you don't have to repeat yourself. There is at least one worn picnic table to use.

As you get to be at an elevated position on the Mt Black Walk you do get great high country views of the surrounding area. There some nice distinctive granite boulders you can climb that make for a great photograph as well.

The Hanging Rock walk also contains quite a few grass trees that also make for a great photograph and makes the scenery a bit different from many other walks. These grass trees are quite common in the Mt Black area but generally aren't too common on most bushwalks.

As an additional walk in the Heathcote-Graytown National Park I think the Mt Black Walk is definitely worth doing. For the opportunity to see all the numerous grass trees, climb the granite boulders and a relatively great view overlooking the surrounding area its worth the 2 hour walking time. Just don't be expecting lush green rainforest or tree ferns because you aren't going to get it. Given the relatively dry terrain it's an enjoyable walk.
