Altona

Altona is a destination you imagine will have pretty standard food and being a beach destination you may already have some preconceptions as to the type and quality. With an open mind though Altona has some pretty good food establishments.
Off the beaten track: Venture out of the Altona beach area and visit two hidden gems (at least hidden from the gernal weekend visitors) at Teru Japanese and Birdcage Altona Cafe. Two of our personal favourites in the area.
Chainstore charm: Okay, chainstore and franchise restaurants aren't typically the greatest. However, Hecho en Mexico rises above this cliche and is actually pretty good. Love the vibes and colour!
A classic: Old school charm that is definitely a lot better than what it appears as you walk along the high street. Pier 71 is a lovely Italian restaurant that rises above its apparent average exterior looks. Peer in and it might just take your fancy.
A goody: Unfortunately Chinese restaurants in the suburbs can often times be pretty average. Tina's Dumpling Houses rises above.

Tina's Dumpling House
Tina's Dumpling House is a great Chinese restaurant in Altona. We've been here multiple types and it delivers an above average Chinese restaurant experience. It's better than many Chinese restaurants you typically find in the suburbs and we are happy to recommend it.

Birdcage Altona Café
The Birdcage Altona Cafe is a winner. One of the best cafes going in the West. Fantastic food that also looks divine! Well worth the effort driving here if you are looking for a new café to try.

Teru Japanese
It's a café serving excellent Japanese food a cut above the average and well above many in Melbourne CBD. It's small and pretty basic on the inside but the food is superb.

Hecho En Mexico
It's a chain store but that doesn't mean it can't be great. Yes, we love the vibes, the vibrant colours, fun and the food. Plus it's pretty good value as well.
