Blackwood Mineral Springs Reserve: A Peaceful Day Trip in Victoria
Blackwood Mineral Springs Reserve is a lovely riverside escape in Blackwood, Victoria, where families, couples and keen photographers can slow down beside the Lerderderg River. With picnic shelters, free barbecues, mineral water outlets and bushland scenery, it is an easy country destination for a relaxed weekend drive from Melbourne.
Why Visit This Riverside Mineral Springs Reserve?
The reserve combines simple country pleasures in one beautiful setting. You can enjoy a picnic under cover, listen for kookaburras, cross the footbridge for river views and sample water from the mineral springs when the outlets are available. It feels wonderfully unhurried, which is exactly what many of us want from a Victorian day trip.
The picnic facilities are a genuine highlight. Moorabool Shire lists multiple undercover areas with picnic tables, bench seating and free barbecues, making the reserve practical for family lunches and small gatherings. Pack food, drinking water and a few extra layers because Blackwood can feel cool beneath the forest canopy.
For me, places like Blackwood are also about discovery. A visit might begin as a simple picnic stop and turn into a photography walk, a historic detour or a longer country adventure. That reminds me of visiting the Ballarat International Foto Biennale and unexpectedly discovering a wider Pyrenees trail of art, wineries and food. Getting out of the city often rewards the effort with something new.
Bring a camera or phone because the river, footbridge, tall trees and changing light create plenty of opportunities for landscape and family photographs. I would happily pack my OM-5 for the weather sealing and light weight, although any camera is useful when the scenery is this photogenic.
The mineral water is part of Blackwood's identity, but visitors should treat onsite signs and current advice as the final word. At least when we visited there was a warning about regular consumption of the ineral water being potentially dangerous but as a once-off visitor we were happy to taste some of the mineral water.
If you've ever tasted the mineral spring water at Daylesford, Taradale or Kyneton you'll be immediately familiar with the taste. For others, its well worth tasting at least once in your lifetime. The soda spring has experienced contamination and flooding issues in recent years, so do not assume every outlet will be operating or suitable for drinking on the day of your visit.
Walking options connect the reserve with the surrounding forest and historic landscape.
Check changed conditions before leaving home and choose only open tracks that suit your fitness, footwear and the weather. There is nearby Shaw Lake you can walk to via two different walking tracks that are only up to 2km in length although the Moonlight Gully walk is quite steep so consider this if your knees casue you pain.
Blackwood itself is a small historic goldmining village surrounded by Wombat State Forest and the Lerderderg landscape. Add time for the main street, a country meal or nearby attractions such as the Garden of St Erth and Shaws Lake Picnic Area.
Blackwood Mineral Springs Reserve is best enjoyed without rushing. Bring a picnic, leave room for a spontaneous stop and make a beautiful day of it. It may not have the noise of a major attraction, but its river, forest and old goldfields atmosphere make it a quietly awesome Victorian escape.
Trivia: Blackwood grew during Victoria's gold rush, and the mineral springs beside the Lerderderg River later became one of the village's best-known visitor attractions. The reserve also provides access to historic walking country around Shaws Lake and Sweet's Lookout, subject to current track closures.
Getting there
Blackwood Mineral Springs Reserve is at 41 Golden Point Road, Blackwood VIC 3458. From central Melbourne, travel west toward Bacchus Marsh, then continue through the forested roads to Blackwood. Allow extra time in wet or foggy conditions and watch for wildlife on the final approach.
- Drive times (approx.): About 1 hour 20 minutes from Flinders Street Station in normal traffic. Allow longer at peak times.
- Good base: Daylesford, for accommodation, dining and spa-country attractions.

When
The reserve is a year-round destination, with autumn and spring especially pleasant for picnics and walking. Check local conditions, fire danger information and Parks Victoria closure notices before travelling.
Cost
A small entry or maintenance fee may apply at the reserve. Note: We we visited there was signage on the gate with a $3 fee. However, upon checking with the camp office found out it was presently FREE (as at August 2026) Bring a payment option and check current signage on arrival. Barbecue use is listed by Moorabool Shire as free.

The surrounding area has plenty of family friendly walks. if you've never visited Trentham or Blackwood plan ahead of time to make the most of your visit. Here are some of the walks worth considering:
- Whipstick Loop Walk. In our estimation the most picturesque walk in the area and definitely worth walking.
- Lerderderg Heritage River Walk: in next door to the Whipstick Loop Walk and also offers plenty of lush green vegetations and a stream running through it and well worth adding if you are an avid bush walker.
- Domino Rail Trail Walk: Is perfect if you don't like climbs or descents although as a one-way walk you might find the return a bit boring.
- Trentham Falls: Not really a walk but don't MISS out if you've never visited Trentham.
- Blackwood Mineral Springs to Shaws Lake walk. A short but semi-demanding walk to do while you are here at Blackwood Mineral Springs Reserve.
