The Castlemaine Botanic Gardens is a serene and picturesque retreat, perfect for nature lovers and casual visitors alike. Situated in the heart of Castlemaine, these gardens are a splendid example of 19th-century landscaping, boasting a rich history and an impressive collection of plant species. From the moment you enter, you are enveloped in a tranquil atmosphere, with the gentle sounds of birds chirping and leaves rustling in the breeze providing a soothing backdrop.
Perfectly central location: Located directly across from The Mill, the Castlemaine Botanic Gardens is perfectly placed for you to burn off some calories if you've just over-indulged yourself.
One of the standout features of the Castlemaine Botanic Gardens is the diverse range of flora on display. The gardens are home to a wide variety of trees, shrubs, and flowers, many of which are labeled with informative plaques.
Kids Day Out: The Castlemaine Botanic Gardens has an extensive play area to keep the kids entertained and give yourself a bit of a break.
There are plenty of picnic tables for you both sheltered and out in the sun. This is great if you don't want to get sunbaked and also to help you save a few dollars if you bring your own food.
The playground area is pretty extensive so hopefully it will prove to be a great spot to let the kids keep themselves entertained while you take a bit of a breather.
The Castlemaine Botanic Gardens also borders the Eltham Copper Butterfly Reserve. This is a unique and rare habitat for the Eltham Copper Butterfly. The walk includes a bit of an upward incline and some dry native bush area.
The Eltham Copper Butterfly Reserve is typical dry scrubby Australian bush. The reserve is pretty small in scale but is nice enough and contrasts well against the more formalised Botanic Gardens.
The scale of some of the trees in the Botanic Gardens is pretty impressive that makes sense as the gardens were first established in 1866 that makes the Castlemaine Botanic Gardens among the earliest of Vicotria's provincial botanic gardens.
Easy walk: At only 1.74 km and being totally flat if you don't go into the Eltham Butterfly Reserve the Castlemaine Botanic Gardens is an easy walk for all ages and fitness levels.
There is a small lake at one end of the Castlemaine Botanic Gardens thats adds some scenic value to a walk around the gardens.
