The Malmsbury Viaduct is world famous in Malmsbury. Yeah, joking but you know what I mean. Anyway, this is a highlight on any visit to Malmsbury and particuarly first time visitors and for those who may never visit Malmsbury again in their lifetimes.

History: The Malmsbury Viaduct, an iconic railway bridge located in Malmsbury, Victoria, Australia, stands as a remarkable example of 19th-century engineering and architectural prowess. Constructed between 1858 and 1860, the viaduct was designed as part of the broader effort to expand the Melbourne to Bendigo railway line during the Victorian Gold Rush.

This railway was essential for transporting people, goods, and resources between the goldfields and the rapidly growing city of Melbourne. The viaduct, with its grand design, exemplified the ambition of the colonial government to modernize the transportation infrastructure and ensure the prosperity of the region.

Today, the Malmsbury Viaduct is a heritage-listed structure, recognized for its historical and architectural significance. Its majestic arches still carry trains across the Coliban River, serving as a reminder of the region’s rich past and the role of infrastructure in shaping Victoria's development.

Tourist Atraction: The viaduct remains a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors who admire its engineering brilliance and historical importance. It stands as both a functional piece of railway infrastructure and a symbol of the Victorian Gold Rush era, reflecting the lasting legacy of 19th-century innovation and ambition in Australia.

Design: The design of the viaduct was influenced by European railway architecture, particularly the grand bridges and viaducts built in the United Kingdom during the railway boom of the 19th century. The arches, with their elegant proportions and the use of local bluestone, evoke a sense of permanence and strength.

Vantage Points: The easiest and most common way to view the Malmsbury Viaduct is via a walk through the Malmsbury Botanic Gardens. This gets you up close and personal so you can take a few pictures and selfies.

From Malmsbury Reservoir: For an alternative view and to see more of Malmsbury we also recommend visiting Malmsbury Reservoir to take in the different vista and do the easy 30 minute walk.

Everythings gone green: One thing about Malmsbury is that this is a very green coloured area. If you are used to dry barren scrubby bush that is in lots of the goldmining areas then Malmsbury is like a breath of fresh air.

Information plaques: There is some information on the history of the Malmsbury Viaduct in the Botanic Gardens and this is worth a good read. Unlike modern 21st century Australia things could get built a lot faster back then. Alas infrastructure projects in modern day Australia seem to take forever.

Greater Efficiency in Australia's Past: Case in point the section of railway from Melbourne to Sunbury only took them seven months. We can only dream of that kind of efficiency now.
