Bulla Hill Railway

Bulla Hill Railway

Nestled in the scenic outskirts of Melbourne, Bulla Hill Railway is a delightful attraction that captures the nostalgia and charm of vintage miniature railways. Perfect for families, train enthusiasts, and anyone looking to take a step back in time, the railway offers a unique journey through picturesque landscapes and the green countryside of Bulla.

Bulla Hill Railway

From the onset, the dedication of the volunteers at Bulla Hill is evident. Their passion for maintaining and operating the miniature trains shines through, making every ride a special experience. The trains themselves, while miniature, are beautifully preserved and offer an authentic feel of yesteryear rail travel. The attention to detail, from the train's whistle to the lovingly recreated stations, is commendable.

Bulla Hill Railway

The ride on the scenic 1.5km track takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. This journey, though short, is packed with lovely views, including a trip around the serene lake and through tunnels. The gentle chug of the train combined with the natural setting provides a peaceful, relaxing experience. The open carriages ensure that passengers, especially children, have an unobstructed view of the surroundings. Keep a lookout for the local dinosaurs!

Dinosaur Theme: One of the unique aspects of Bulla Hill Railway is its dinosaur theme. Along the railway track, you can spot various dinosaur figures, adding an element of adventure and excitement, especially for younger visitors.

Dinosaurs are just one of the sights though and don't be suprised to see some koalas (sorry folks but these are not real) and chimpanzees too!

Bulla Hill Railway

I have to admit I probably imagined the dinosaurs looking a bit more impressive. However everything has it's place and I know the kids don't really mind anyway. They're just so excited to be on a train ride having fun!

Bulla Hill Railway

One section of the train ride has lovely views down across the valley back towards Melbourne that is particularly attractive and a memorable part of the train journey.

Choo Choo Shop: There also happens to be a small dedicated stall for all things dinosaur and train. While not a large store you might be able to find yourself a bargain and buy some small present for the kids.

If you love Thomas The Tank Engine as my nephew did growing up you might find something to your liking.

Bulla Hill Railway

Apart from the train ride, the Bulla Hill Railway grounds also feature picnic spots, making it an ideal location for a family day out. Kids can also enjoy the playground area, making the entire experience a well-rounded family outing. Conversely, you can eat out at the market next door!

One of the standout features of Bulla Hill Railway is its affordability. Currently (2024) the ticket price for a single ride is $5 although this is always subject to change so check their website if the price is particularly important to you. Still we consider the ticket prices reasonable, ensuring that it remains accessible for most families and groups.
