The Malmsbury Reservoir is a fishing spot, water supply, home to a short walk and great for an alternative view of the Malmsbury Viaduct.

History: The Malmsbury Reservoir has played a crucial role in the region's water supply since its construction in the late 19th century. Built between 1866 and 1877, the reservoir was part of a broader initiative to ensure a stable and reliable water supply for the expanding agricultural and urban areas, particularly as the population surged during the Victorian Gold Rush.

The reservoir is fed by the Coliban River and was one of the earliest large scale water storage projects in Victoria and a key component of the Coliban Water Supply System, which aimed to deliver water to Bendigo and surrounding goldfields.

When completed, the Malmsbury Reservoir had the capacity to store approximately 17,000 megalitres of water, making it one of the largest reservoirs in Victoria at the time.

A view divided: When you come here the view is essentially divided into two. On one side you have the water filled reservoir and on the other green scenic views looking towards Malmsbury and the Malmsbury Viaduct.

Design: John D. Martyr, a prominent engineer of the time, led the design and construction of the reservoir. His innovative approach involved the creation of an earth and rockfill dam, a method that was relatively advanced for the period.

Utility in the 21st Century: To this day the reservoir contributes to urban water supplies for towns like Castlemaine and Bendigo. Its importance becomes even more evident during periods of drought, when the reservoir helps ensure water availability in an otherwise dry landscape. In this way, the Malmsbury Reservoir has had a lasting impact on the economic and social development of the region.

Malmsbury Viaduct: Most people will view the Malmsbury Viaduct from the Botanic Gardens but for quite a different view it is definitely worth coming to Malmsbury Reservoir. You are also able to complete an easy 30 minute walk.

Everythings gone green: One thing about Malmsbury is that this is a very green coloured area. If you are used to dry barren scrubby bush that is in lots of the goldmining areas then Malmsbury is like a breath of fresh air.

Infrastructure: As a piece of of functional infrastructure the Malmsbury reservoir probably isn't everyone's cup of tea. However we believe the alternative view of the Malmsbury Viaduct as well as enjoying the double sided view as you walk along one edge of the reservoir make it worth while.

That View: You have to enjoy the view of Malmsbury Viaduct while you are here as well as admire the industry of Victoria's past and present.

Location
From Malmsbury Town Centre: Malmsbury Reservoir is an approximately 13 minute drive from Malmsbury Town Centre.
In A Nutshell
Today, the Malmsbury Reservoir is not only a functional piece of infrastructure but also a recreational site and an important environmental asset.
The surrounding parklands attract visitors for activities such as picnicking, fishing, and birdwatching. The reservoir itself is part of the heritage-listed Coliban Water Supply System, which is recognized for its historical and engineering significance.
Its enduring presence, alongside the nearby Malmsbury Viaduct, reflects the ambitious infrastructure projects of the 19th century that helped shape the landscape and future of Victoria.
Appreciate the past and present while you are here and admire the GREEN scenery. Plan ahead and have a picnic while you are here.
