The Lal Lal Falls are about 1 Hr 30 minutes from Melbourne and 30 minutes drive from Ballarat. I imagine before the forest was cleared Lal Lal Falls were are magnificent site. However devoid of surrounding trees and bush the Lal Lal Falls seem bare and a bit sad.
To view the Lal Lal Falls it only takes about 5 minutes walk from the Lal Lal Falls Reserve to the viewing platform. Lal Lal Falls isn't the busiest waterfall you are likely to visit so you should be able to take your time taking any photographs.
Lal Lal Falls can run dry so I recommend coming here during the winter months. You definitely do run the danger of visiting Lal Lal Falls and not getting much of a photograph. Note: You can still walk to the much much smaller Moorabool Falls (from Harris Road) if you are desperate for a waterfall photograph.
The Lal Lal Falls is very accessible even for the most unfit person. The viewing platform makes it very easy to view the waterfall.
I have to admit that on the scale of waterfalls to visit in western Victoria I wouldn't put Lal Lal Falls particularly high in the list. However, equally I have never been here when there has been a significant amount of rainfull. Despite this I do recommend doing the Lal Lal Falls to Moorabool Falls walk as you get quite a different visual perspective from the opposite side of the waterfall, the grasslands are quite visually appealing, you can view the Lal Lal Reservoir that you cannot see from the Reserve side and you get to enjoy the Moorabool Falls as well.
