Cherry Lake is definitely underrated and quite easy to just drive past. With an open mind you can really appreciate Cherry Lake and if the weather is generous enjoy a beautiful sunset.
At only 3.5km is length Cherry Lake is suitable for all types of walkers. The walk outside the perimeter of Cherry Lake is predominantly at lake level so you don't have any inclines. This makes it easy for walkers of all ages both kids and even those of us with slightly dodgy knees. You can get some elevated views of the lake from one side of the perimater walk by going up an incline.
Cherry Lake is definitely suited for families as it has well maintained toilets and a BBQ area for those organised enough to plan a family gathering or catching up with friends. Depending on the weather it can get very popular at Cherry Lake.
Cherry Lake is both a recreation and conservation so please keep to the designated areas and paths. You can fish at Cherry Lake and it can be quite popular for this purpose and we have sometimes seen people with quite a bountiful catch. However if you do choose to go fishing please keep to the recreational area.

Cherry Lake also as a beginners skatepark for the kids if that is their thing as well as some outdoor exercise machines if you are one of those people who actually use them.
Cherry lake is home to a range of native birds including pelicans, swans, fairy wrens and swamp hens. Pelicans are often seen at the lake and make impressive viewing as they fly above the lake. The indigenous Altona Skipper Butterfly has a local habitat in the stands of Chaffy Saw Sedge at the western end of the lake.
With an open mind Cherry Lake is more than just a small man-made lake (as you pass by on the way to Altona Beach). It's actually quite beautiful and a perfect short walk even in the cold autumn, winter or spring weather.

Cherry Lake is approximately 17km from Flinders Street Station in the city or 29 minustes drive. Cherry Lake is 2 minutes drive from the Altona Beach shops area or approximately 1/2 km.
