Port Fairy and Warrnambool

The Port Fairy and Warrnambool region offers some great hiking opportunities. Probably the most famous nature area in the region is Tower Hill and definitely is a must visit for those people who get to this part of Victoria rarely. Another place worth visiting is Budj Bim National Park.


Port Fairy is such a beautiful little town 26 minutes (28km) drive away from Warnnambool and 3h 25 min from Melbourne. If you have never been you really should make the effort to get here. It's one of the best and prettiest places in Victoria.


Tower Hill

The Tower Hill Walk near Port Fairy contains a number of small walks all of easy difficulty. Tower Hill Reserve is approximately 3 Hr and 19 minutes from Melbourne CBD or 276km. Tower Hill should be on everyone's must visit nature spots as it contains a now dormant volcano that offers some of the best and unique scenery in Victoria.

Budj Bim National Park

Budj Bim National Park visitor area is home to lava canals, caves and a crater lake. It is surrounded by lush bush land and native wildlife. There are mountain bike and 4-wheel drive tracks as well as a camping ground if you wish to stay longer. A mandatory cave photo is a given!

Mt Noorat

Mt Noorat is a perfect place to stretch your legs and break up your drive either back home to Melbourne or on your way to Port Fairy or Warrnambool. At only 1km its a nice way to break up your journey without using up a lot of time.

Hopkins Falls

Hopkins Falls are a 35 minute drive from Port Fairy and only a 15 minute drive from Warrnambool. Hopkins Falls is quite a large waterfall surrounded by lush farmland. Best visited on the way back to Melbourne. Home to Hopkins Falls Scenic Reserve.

Mt Leura and Mount Sugarloaf

Mount Leura and Mount Sugarloaf is 55 minutes from from Warrnambool. This is another walk best as a quick pitstop either going to Warrnambool or Port Fairy or on your way back to Melbourne. You get a nice view of the surrounding farmland from the summit and now dormant volcanoe.

Location

The drive to Warrnambool from Melbourne CBD is approximately 3h 30m or 256km with options to take a longer journey via the Great Ocean Road or via Ballarat.
