Creswick Heritage Walk

St Georges Lake Walk (Creswick)

The Creswick Heritage Walk in Creswick is a moderately challenging walk of 8.5km. The most scenic portion of the walk is at St Georges Lake while the La Gerche section of the contains some steeper up and down components. The steepest part of the walk is the section of the track joining the La Gerche Trail to the St Georges Lake via the Goldfields track.

The Creswick Heritage Walk is really a combination of smaller walks joint to create one single walk. If you don't think you'll ever be coming back to Creswick this really is the walk to do as it includes sections of both the St Georges Lake Walk, the La Gerch track and Goldfields Track. Also at 8.5km the walk isn't too long and makes it a nice distance for those who will find the other walks too short.

The Creswick Heritage Walk has quite a lot diversity. There are panoramic lake views, a lot of wooded scenery primarily in the La Gerche component of the walk, a steepish climb to the summit of the walk between the La Gerche Track and St George Lake walk including a summit lookout point and view, a cliff face and walking bridge over the spillway at St Georges Lake.

The La Gerche section of the walk contains many trees and many inclines and declines. While nothing extremely challenging it's worth noting that this section is a bit more difficult than St Georges Lake. The trees are quite relaxing and includes many introduced varieties La Gerche planted when regenerating the forest. This area of the track has many signposts outlining the history of the area and the work of La Gerche to restore the forest.

Summit Lookout Point and Map of Mountains (Creswick)

The part of the track that joins the La Gerche walk to the St George Lake Walk is signposted without being entirely clear of its purpose. However the sign is almost impossible to miss. The walk to the summit of the walk is the part of track joining the La Gerche Track to the St George Lake walk. The walk to the summit if travelling from the La Gerche direction is quite steep and the most challenging part of the walk. It also includes walking in some uncovered terrain that is definitely on the barren, bare side and quite unrelenting on a very sunny day. However once you reach the summit you get rewarded by a solitary tree signposting you have reached the summit, a map outlining all the mountains and panoramic if slightly unspectacular views of the mountain range.

If travelling from the La Gerche direction once you have reached the summit lookout point the rest of the walk is relatively plainsailing as you will descend down to the St Georges Lake. You skirt the outside of the lake and then will head back into Creswick via the Wallaby Track. While this section of the walk is at least separated from traffic it is also probably the most boring part of the walk.
