The Blacksmith's Cottage and Forge in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria, is a heritage-listed site that offers visitors a glimpse into the town's rich history. Located at 100 Main Street, this historic property dates back to the 1850s and has been home to blacksmiths and their families for over a century. It holds National Trust classification and is listed on the National Estate, making it a significant landmark in the region.

Volunteer Run: The Blacksmiths Cottage is run by dedicated volunteers.

The site comprises the original blacksmith's cottage, forge, and outbuildings, all meticulously preserved to reflect their historical significance. Visitors can explore the cottage to gain insight into the living conditions of the era, while the forge showcases traditional blacksmithing tools and equipment, offering a tangible connection to the past.

The site also serves as an educational resource, hosting tours and school excursions that delve into the history of Bacchus Marsh and the role of blacksmithing in the community. These programs provide valuable learning opportunities, particularly for those interested in local history and traditional crafts.

The Blacksmith's Cottage and Forge is not only a testament to the craftsmanship of the past but also a community hub that brings history to life. Its preservation allows current and future generations to appreciate the heritage of Bacchus Marsh and the evolution of trades like blacksmithing.

The actual blacksmith area is out the back and showcases lots of old machinery and tools. In a country like Australia this is regarded as quite old but we all know in reality most of the equipment isn't really that old at all. In fact the cottage was constructed circa 1851.

I guess you could call the blacksmith area a barn and personally all the corrugated iron while certainly not new is still relatively modern.

Seeing the clothes line and hanging the clothes and quilts up to dry perhaps is agood reminder of how things have changed. Modern washing machines and our extensive wardrobes I imagine would seem quite excessive to many people of prior eras.

Information: There are information plaques spread throughout the premises helping explain what you are seeing and giving historical context to what was then so we can contrast our modern lives of today.
