Williamstown Foreshore Walk

Williamstown Foreshore Walk Melbourne

The Williamstown Foreshore Walk is great for a semi-explorer who feels like getting that extra bit further away from the usual Williamstown restaurant district or Williamstown beach.

Williamstown Foreshore Walk

The Williamstown Foreshore Walk takes in quite a few different sites depending on how far you are willing to walk. Keep in mind its really a one-way walk so you are either going to have to retread your path for the return journey or organise a pickup somewhere along the way.

Assuming you begin at the Williamstown end of the walk proceed west along the foreshore towards Yarraville. Essentially you'll keep going in this directions for as long as you are willing to go.

The first major stop along the way is the Sandy Point Nature Reserve. While you can bypass this part of the walk really this is worth a quick little exploration. Also, you can't really view this area properly when you drive by so its definitely worth having a look around and enjoying it's unique view and a bit of nature. Keep your expectations of a wildlife area in check though as this is still quite an industrial area so truly scenic panoramic views are off the table.

Sandy Point Nature Reserve

Once you're done exploring Sandy Point Nature Reserve the next major point of interest is the HMAS Yarra Memorial. It's definitely worth stopping here to have a read and learn about some Australian nautical and shipping history.

Continuing on with the walk you'll get to Riverside Park. The park itself isn't really that special but is notable for providing a nice view of the Westgate bridge, being a fishing spot for those in the know and for learning about a quite extensive scenic cycle ride of which the Riverside Park is point number 2 out of the 12 stopping off points.

Continuing further you'll get closer and closer to Grazeland and Scienceworks. The walk will take you to the punt fairy across the river and it's worth waiting to see the fairy for yourself. I'd always driven past the stop but never seen the fairy in real-life so depending on who you are that might interest you.

You also get a nice viewpoint of he Westgate bridge from here.

Continuing the walk you will eventually reach Westgate Bridge Memorial Park. Now this park is under renovation as at 14 August 2023 so don't expect much facility wise. Stony Creek Backwash which is next to the Westgate Bridge Memorial Park isn't the most scenic and doesn't smell the greatest either.

However, it does have the redeeming feature of a nice vantage point to take photos of the Westgate bridge.

Location

Williamstown is approximately 13km from Flinders Street Station in the city or approximately 30 minutes drive.
