The Clunes Museum is surprisingly good for a place the size of Clunes. We typically aren't super big fans of museums especially non-specialised museums but Clunes Museum is definitely above average for this kind of experience.

The Clunes Museum is handily placed although realistically everything location is close in Clunes. However if you visit Clunes on market day and you've never been to Clunes before you really have no reason not to visit the museum as it is literally right on your doorstep.

The good olde days: Befitting a small regional town much of the museum is devoted to Clunes historical origins and essential reason for being.

The Clunes Museum shows off much of the historical past with many artifacts of literal household items In some ways modern society isn't too disimilar from yesteryear but off course all our modern IT would be totally foreign back in the day. It''s nice to view all the old furniture and basic cooking apparatus, dining tablee, table cloth, cutlery and the like.

Information: There is lots of information to read for the more inquisitive people or people who enjoy history. Australia in it's modern form isn't so old so much of the colonial history from a historical sense really isn't that far from the present. In many ways it makes things more interesting as our present day connection is actually quite close and we can relate to what we are seeing.

Artifacts: It's interesting viewing the items in the museum and even something as simple as a scale can be interesting! For me having grown up working in a fruit shop I can appreciate this American scale. Of course we all have our own personal interests so what you may find interesting will likely be totally different.

Made and Designed in Clunes: This plaque from winning an award at an international exhibition in Calcutta, India is particuarly interesting. A tomato sauce manufactured and produced in Clunes is testament to the entrepreneurial spirit at the time. It also demonstrates that even in 1883-84, Australia, and a place as small as Clunes was still somehow connected to the international stage.

It's all about the gold: Of course much of regional and small town Victoria owes much of their existence to gold mining booms and busts of days gone by. Just like many modern immigrants much of peoples drive and energy was simply trying to make a living and economic opportunity for their families.

While goldmining at least in Victoria is basically a non-existant industry now its good to look at the past and even imagine the trying and hard work people endured and worked through to support their families in days gone by. When you drive through scrubby goldmining areas such as Ballarat, Maldon, Bendigo and much of western Victoria you know how hard the dry and hot conditions would have been.

It's a wild wild life: I always enjoy looking at these displays of local wildlife. It's always interesting seeing the birds and animals closer than you ever could in the wild. The tawny frogmouth is such a great Australian bird.

In A Nutshell
Overall, the Clunes Musuem is one of the better regional Victorian museums you are going to come across. We like how it is housed in a nice modern building, is well maintained, has quite interesting things to view and is so central that you have no reason not to visit especially if you may never visit Clunes ever again.
