The Altona Miniature Railway in Melbourne offers a delightful experience for train enthusiasts and families alike. This volunteer-run hobby club, which operates every third Sunday of the month, provides a unique opportunity for both kids and adults to enjoy miniature train rides. Starts 10AM.
Family-friendly Setting: With its affordable rides and welcoming environment, the railway is an excellent destination for family outings. Children, in particular, find the experience thrilling, making it a perfect weekend activity.
Facilities and Convenience: The railway offers free parking and has picnic tables and chairs, making it convenient for families to spend a whole day there. While there are no cafes on-site, visitors are encouraged to bring their own food, and a small kiosk is available.
The Ride: Altona Miniature Railway is a hobby club run by railway enthusiasts that provide miniature train rides on scaled steam and diesel engines (5″ and 7 1/4″ gauge), over a 1.5 km length track. Great fun for kids and the young at heart.
Before you begin your Altona Miniature Railway journey you may think it is going to be too short. Rest assured the duration of the train ride is definitely very good and you are sure to be satisfied. You won't feel short changed.
A fantastic thing about the train ride is that more than one ride is travelling at a time. This adds to the journey as you pass by other trains and the kids love waving to the other trains.
Adding to the excitement of the ride are the tunnels that pop up along the way. No this isn't the Orient Express but as you approach and go through each tunnel there is definitely a bit of excitement and the kids get a thrill out of it.
A Sense of Community: The Altona Miniature Railway is a hobby club run by railway enthusiasts and is a non-for-profit community run organisation. The sense of joy provided to children, parents and grand-parents is so clear when you visit. They are almost providing a public good service and it is this sense of joy and happiness that makes visiting the Altona Miniature Railway very special.
Food Establishments: While there are a few foodtrucks on site the Altona Miniature Railway is more ideal for those who plan a bit and bring there own picnic food and drinks. You can picnic on site or the fantastic playground and park next door. In fact the neighbouring park is probably one of the most attractive in all of Melbourne.
