Maldon Historic Area: The North British Mine is one of a number of former mines located in the Maldon Historic Area. The Maldon Historic Area is a zone that protects many relics of Maldon's peak gold mining era.
Gold mining relics: within the Maldon Historic Area include a number of deserted shafts and tunnels, piles of mining debris, quartz roasting furnaces, stone walls, chimneys, and old machinery.
In addition are Box and Ironbark forests, which were once at risk of destruction due to the relentless need for timber to fuel steam boilers and reinforce mine tunnels. Thankfully with todays more modern mindset the Box and Ironbark Forests are on a gradual road to recovery.
The North British Mine is probably the most comprehensive of the mines in Maldon. For this reason, this is more interesting than lots of the other mines and if you are only going to visit one mine we recommend visiting the North British Mine.
Education: There are a number of information plaques throughout the North British Mine area that makes a visit here much more meaningful. It pays to at least read a bit of the information material to better appreciate what you are witnessing, especially if you are never going to visit again.
Kilns: The North British Mine is great because you can clearly see the remnants of the old kilns.
Distinctive Site: The North British Mine makes for a great walk around and overall is quite visually interesting. Compared to some of the other sites you will be able to get some semi-interesting photo's that clearly identifies the North British Mine and it's this distinctiveness that makes a visit here worth your while.

From Maldon town centre: North British Mine is a 3 minute drive from Maldon town centre.
From Castlemaine: North British Mine is an 18 minute drive from Castlemaine.
