Mount Monument Wines

Mount Monument Wines

Mount Monument Wines (located in Romsey very near Macedon) is a multifaceted venue offering wine-tastings, a separate restaurant and a sculpture park. There is a bit of everything all in a good way. We can definitely say this is an unknown gem to most who don't live in the region and definitely worth seeking out.

Mount Monument is a unique single vineyard located at the foot of a small rounded hillock created 6.25 million years ago, providing a pristine setting for crafting wines with complexity and longevity. Situated at an elevation of approximately 630 metres, the vineyard's rare volcanic silica soils contribute to the distinctive character of Mount Monument's Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Grenache Rose, Shiraz and Greco.

The unique location, elevation and the volcanic soils contribute to limited yields, extended ripening periods and the production of high-quality wines.

Wine-tasting: Mount Monument has a relatively large wine tasting area that feels right out of a central Melbourne wine bar. In other words it feels upmarket and quite cool looking. Indulge in a refined cool-climate wine tasting of Mount Monument's vintages. While reservations are recommended to guarantee seating, walk-in guests are also warmly welcomed.

The Mount Monument cellar door has it's own menu for grazing with your wine tasting or few glasses of wine. This is quite a cool menu and quite similar to the main menu in style but clearly customised for the wine tasting. Although we didn't try it we would have been quite happy eating entirely of the cellar door menu if we didn't stay for lunch.

Restaurant: The Mount Monument feels and looks like a fine-dining restaurant. If you haven't been here before or have never heard of Mount Monument I think you would definitely be surprised in a positive way. The Mount Monument restaurant is quite eye-catching and if you want to feel like you are on holiday this is definitely that kind of destination.

When we visited for lunch the menu comprised of a four course set menu of which you could add oysters as an additional starter as well as a range of cheeses for your own mini cheeseboard. To some (a set menu may be a disappointment) so we suggest you ring ahead or check their website before visiting if you don't like this type of menu.

We were happy with the meal which had excellent quality across the board except the main that was slightly overcooked and potatoes that were over salted. Now out of a four course meal, the other three courses were excellent and overall, for four courses, it offered good value for money and a very nice dining experience.

The entrees and starters provide a good mixture of food and different flavours and were probably the highlight of the meal.

Now if you have had a few of these set menu's it always seems to be a bit harsh judging any meal based on the worst of each of the courses. To have superb or excellent across four courses is unusual.

Anyway, we were very happy with the meal and the total dining experience. Excellent tasting and presented food, fantastic customer service and a unique and stylish venue make the Mount Monument restaurant easy to recommend.
