Hopkins Falls are set against lush dairy country. Hopkins Falls is among Victoria's widest at an impressive 90 metres with excellent views to be had at either the viewing platform or at the foot of the falls. The viewing platform is easily accessible. Hopkins Falls Scenic Reserve is also a starting point for a longer walk to Blacks Falls.
Hopkins Falls makes an ideal picnic, fishing and walking spot as gas BBQs and toilets are provided. You can walk to the grass at the foot of the falls and have a picnic there as well as getting a different view for any photos.
As per most waterfalls in Victoria, Hopkins Falls is best viewed in winter or after heavy rainfall. If you happen to visit Hopkins Falls during the summer keep your eyes wide open as for only a few days each summer eels migrate upstream and over the falls. A great natural phenomena if you are very fortunate to time your visit perfectly.
When I visited there was plenty of water and the width of the waterfall is indeed impressive as was the volume of water. However as shown in the photos the Hopkins Falls is pretty much devoid of surrounding vegetation as it is now farmland. I have nothing against farmers but while the countryside is lush green it's just not the backdrop to waterfalls that I prefer.
Hopkins Falls isn't one of my favourite waterfalls but at least it is likely to be flowing unlike quite a lot of Victorian waterfalls and does make a nice picnic spot.
