Set against the backdrop of Daylesford's picturesque landscapes, the Chocolate Mill is a chocophile's dream come true. A visit to this delightful establishment offers a perfect blend of sensory indulgence and artisan craftsmanship. At just 10 minutes drive from Daylesford rhis is a great place to keep the kids happy.
History
In January 2000 Chris Weippert had a dream to build an environmentally friendly business. A chocolate shop, selling 100% European chocolate made with the best quality ingredients.
In true commitment to the cause the dream became a reality in January 2001 when Chris and his wife Jen moved from Perth to Daylesford and soon after purchased a block of bushland just outside town.
On 21 November 2003 the Chocolate Mill officially opened and the Chocolate Mill was an instant hit. Popularity soon spread about the quality of the chocolate and culminated in 2004 when the Chocolate Mill won the Goldfields best new business award.
Quality Above All Else
A wonderful feature of the Chocolate Mill is it's never ceasing commitment to quality. The business uses 100% European chocolate utilising only the finest Belgian couverture chocolate. The chocolate is produced in Belgium by Callebaut, one of the leaders in chocolate and relied upon by chefs and chocolatiers all over the world.
Callebaut is one of the rare chocolate makers that continue to grind, roast and select cacao beans themselves. Callebaut create their own exclusive cocoa mass selecting only the best varieties of cocoa bean. They roast the beans in their entire shell to protect the most delicate aromas that yield an intense, complex and deep cocoa flavour.
This commitment to quality extends to supporting the original cocoa growers with The Chocolate Mill using Fairtrade certified chocolate.
Setup
The Chocolate Mill is roughly broken up into three main areas. When you enter the premises you encounter the the covered dining area and can order from a range of hot choclates, coffees, Belgian tarts, cakes, jaffles, tea, ice-cream sundaes and more.
To the left you have the chocolate store and you can see the chocolate making area. Here you can select from there range of packaged chocolates, clothing, read about The Chocolate Mill history and make a selection of your own favourite individual chocolates.
The final area is an outdoor area directly in front of the covered dining and cafe area. Here there are outside tables and chairs you can eat and drink all the chocolates you've just bought! When it gets busy I can imagine these will be full utilised.
I wouldn't say the food is amazing but then again the pricing is fair so we have nothing to complain about. If choosing a hot chocolate we recommend having the chilli option. Don't be afraid, it isn't that spicy but if unsure just chat with the sales assistant.
Location
The Chocolate Mill is located at 5451 Midland Hwy, Mount Franklin VIC 3461 just 10 minutes drive from Daylesford.
