Moonlight Gully Walk at Blackwood Mineral Springs Reserve is a scenic Blackwood bushwalk that combines the Lerderderg River, tall forest, goldfields history and a rewarding climb toward Shaws Lake and the lookout. The route as about 2 kilometres, making it a compact short country hike with enough steep and rocky ground to feel like a proper adventure.
A Short Blackwood Bushwalk With Real Character
Starting from the mineral springs reserve, the Moonlight Gully route heads across the footbridge and into forested country beside the Lerderderg River. The surroundings are peaceful, but this is not simply a flat riverside stroll. Expect uneven surfaces and steeper sections, particularly where the route climbs toward the lookout and Shaws Lake.
The reserve itself is a lovely place to begin and finish. Moorabool Shire highlights the mineral water, footbridge, river views and resident kookaburras, while the picnic shelters, seating and barbecue facilities make it easy to turn the walk into a relaxed family day out.
Follow onsite signs carefully from the footbridge toward Moonlight Gully Circuit Track. Published route notes describe a section beside the Lerderderg River, followed by a junction for the lookout and a steep ascent toward Shaws Lake Track. Track names and conditions can change, so treat signage at the reserve as the final guide.
This is the kind of walk where my OM-5 would earn its place in the backpack. The river, mossy forest, old water-race country and changing light offer plenty of photography possibilities without requiring a huge telephoto lens.
Wear sturdy footwear with good grip and take drinking water, even though mineral springs are part of the reserve's identity. Water quality and outlet availability can vary, so follow current signs rather than relying on the springs as your only water source.
The walk is best suited to people comfortable with short, steep and rocky sections. Allow more time after rain, keep children close near drop-offs and the river, and turn back if the track becomes slippery or difficult. A small first-aid kit, charged phone and offline map are sensible additions.
Blackwood's goldmining history gives the landscape extra depth. Old water races and historic tracks remain part of the district, so the walk feels like more than exercise. It is a chance to notice how industry, forest and river have shaped this small Victorian town.
Moonlight Gully Walk is a strong choice for a weekend escape from Melbourne when you want forest scenery without committing to an all-day hike. Finish with a picnic at the reserve or explore Blackwood, the Garden of St Erth and nearby Shaws Lake. That combination of hiking, photography and country discovery is pretty awesome.
Trivia: Moonlight Gully sits within Blackwood's historic goldfields landscape. Water races built during the mining era survive in the district, and some later became walking routes linking the mineral springs, gullies, lookout and Shaws Lake.
Getting there
Begin at Blackwood Mineral Springs Reserve, 41 Golden Point Road, Blackwood VIC 3458. From Melbourne, travel via the Western Freeway toward Bacchus Marsh, then continue through forest roads to Blackwood. The walk starts from the reserve area near the Lerderderg River footbridge.
- Drive times (approx.): About 1 hour 20 minutes from Flinders Street Station in normal traffic. Allow longer during peak periods and poor weather.
- Daylesford: A convenient spa-country base with accommodation, dining and more regional attractions.
- Trentham: A relaxed country base close to Blackwood, forest drives and Trentham Falls.

The walk can be visited year-round, but cool, dry days in autumn and spring are especially pleasant. Check weather, fire danger ratings, seasonal road closures and current park conditions before travelling.
