The Stony Creek Gallery showcases artwork from over 200 artists and designers. A great thing about the gallery is that there is artwork that is suitable for the outdoors as well as the usual indoor setting.
History
The gallery was established by Michael Parker and is a showcase of his artistic journey. Michael Parker has developed his own distinctive style, a product of inspiration drawn from Australia's diverse landscape and his own lived life experience. In his studio practice Michael has produced an amazing range of spectacular artworks with a focus on painting and sculpture.
Much of the Stony Creek Gallery showcases Michael Parkers work. Across his collections you generally encounter contemporary works made up of representations of the living world and other subject matter. We particularly enjoyed his contemporary paintings with an almost Vietnamese sensibility or 1920's Shanghai look to them. However, Michael's work is very diverse so you can expect anything each time you come to the gallery.
We also appreciate that Michael creates many sculptures and that there is an array of artworks designed specifically for the outdoors that sets this gallery apart from a standard gallery.
While Stony Creek Gallery definitely has a lot of largish statement pieces there are also plenty of smaller artworks on display. The gallery has a nice modern contemporary feel to it, is well lit and does it's best to really show off the artwork. There is perhaps too many pieces on display to do them the utmost justice but we really appreciated the diversity of artworks on display.
There is certainly a juxtaposition to Michael Parkers work. The modern contemporary and very cool signature pieces on display do contrast quite drastically with some of the outdoor pieces that almost look like you could pick up from Bunnings or a garden store. All credit for just going all in doing whatever pleases him.
'Contemporary' is the name of the game at Stony Creek Gallery, at least from our experience. Don't expect to see much in the way of old-fashioned artwork here.
