The Malmsbury Botanic Gardens, located in the charming town of Malmsbury is a delightful blend of history, natural beauty, and serene landscapes. Established in 1863, the gardens are among the oldest in Victoria, reflecting the vision of the 19th century colonial settlers who saw the need for green spaces in the rapidly growing towns.
Gateway to the Malmsbury Viaduct: For many though the sole reason to come here will be to view the Malmsbury Viaduct and that's a good enough reason to me!

History: Situated along the Coliban River and adjacent to the Malmsbury Reservoir, the gardens provide a tranquil escape for visitors seeking to connect with nature, while also offering a glimpse into the horticultural styles and design philosophies of the Victorian era.

Lake Views: A prominent feature of the gardens is the ornamental lake, which is surrounded by manicured lawns and native plantings. The lake, fed by the Coliban River, acts as a central focal point and is home to a variety of birdlife, including ducks and other waterfowl.
A unique and notable difference from some gardens is the abundant presence of geese at the Malmsbury Botanic Gardens.

The Malmsbury Botanic Gardens are home to an array of ornamental flower beds and landscaped areas that showcase a mix of native Australian and exotic plants. While the gardens originally reflected the 19th century European style of planting

Easy on the knees: The Malmsbury Botanic Gardens aren't overly large so it is suitable for all levels of walkers including older folk and kids. There are no significant inclines or ascents unless you go right down to the waters edge at the Malmsbury Viaduct.

Points of Interest: In general terms other than the lake there are two other major points of interest. There is a bridge to a very small island and secondly you can get right up and close and personal to the Malmsbury Viaduct.

Everythings gone green: One thing about Malmsbury is that this is a very green coloured area. If you are used to dry barren scrubby bush that is in lots of the goldmining areas then Malmsbury is like a breath of fresh air.

Malmsbury Viaduct: The Botanic Gardens highlight for many visitors will be the Malmsbury Viaduct. From the few entrances to the Botanic Gardens it isn't obvious that you will be able to see the Viaduct so it's a nice surprise for the uninitiated. Sorry, spoiled the fun for you.

For many people who visit the Malmsbury Botanic Gardens and especially first time visitors this may be the sole reason to visit the Botanic Gardens.

Infrastructure: As a piece of functional infrastructure the Malmsbury Viaduct is impressive for standing the test of time with V-line trains still running over the Viaduct to this day.

A Bridge Over Troubles Waters: The bridge is nice enough and the island particuarly small. However while you are here it's still worth walking to the island just for interest. Of course if you have children in tow then you have even more reason.

Location
From Malmsbury Town Centre: Malmsbury Reservoir is an approximately 1 minute drive from Malmsbury Town Centre.
