Capiz Bistro - Williamstown

Review: Capiz Bistro - Williamstown

A great thing about Melbourne is that it is a multicultural melting pot. So when we came across Capiz Bistro and discovered it was a Filipino inspired bistro we were definitely intrigued.

Filipino food establishments are in that interesting place where they are not common but there are just enough of them for them not to be rare. Okay clearly not as common as virtually every other Asian cuisine but there are enough of them to find them if it's one of your favourite food types or it happens to remind you of home.

For those unaware the Filipines was ruled by Spain for over 300 years, from 1565 until 1898. Hence there is a definite Spanish influence and the food is somewhat different from other Asian cuisines. For this reason if you've never tried Filipino food then Capiz Bistro may score some browny points for you.

Capiz Bistro is small but quite attractive and the large wooden front windows that can open up on balmy Melbourne afternoons or evenings that makes it quite a pleasant experience if you dine here on a warm night. There's something special about being open to the elements.

Now that I've been to a few Filipino restaurants I am coming to the conclusion that it just isn't one of my favourite types of cuisine. Nothing against Capiz Bistro just my own personal taste.

Capiz Bistro has everything from crispy chicken skin, pork skewers, pork spring rolls, Nilasing na Hipon (gin-infused school of shrimp fried to perfection), chop suey, sizzling tofu, pork sisig (A sizzling hotplate filled with chopped pork jowl, ears, and belly, and seasoned with onions and chillies, all tossed in a savoury medley of spices and citrus), pork adobo, bicol, bulalo, halo halo and lots lots more.

In other words if you've never tried Filipino food before there is bound to be something new for you to try at Capiz Bistro.

Cakes and desserts: Capiz Bistro also has an extensive range of filipino cakes and desserts and if this is your kind of thing might be another reason to entice you to Capiz Bistro.

Cakes and desserts range from Mangga't Sago, halo-halo (bananas cooked in sugar syrup, sweet potatoes, young coconut, palm fruit, jackfruit, and coconut jelly covered in shaved ice, topped with vanilla ice cream and drizzled with evaporated milk), Buko Pandan, Turon with ice cream, Sans Rival, Special Ube Macapuno Cake and Mangoes and Cream Dream.

Location

Capiz Bistro: is located at 147 Nelson Pl, Williamstown VIC 3016.

In A Nutshell

Capiz Bistro is probably best for the inquisitive diner who has never tried Filipino food before and cake and dessert lovers. For others just check the menu and see if it takes your fancy.

Maybe we just didn't choose the best dishes for our taste buds but nothing really connected with us. However, Capiz Bistro is still a nice attractive small bistro and it's definitely quite pleasant sitting in the front looking out onto the Williamstown High Street.
