Jaathra at Barkly in West Footscray is the kind of local restaurant that makes eating out in Melbourne’s west feel relaxed, welcoming and full of flavour. As a mum with two young children, I always appreciate a place where the food is interesting for adults but still approachable enough for the kids, and Jaathra has that lovely neighbourhood feel that suits both. Located around Barkly Street in West Footscray, it is a great option for anyone searching for restaurants in West Footscray, family-friendly dining in Melbourne’s west, or a casual place to enjoy a tasty meal close to home.
This is a casual place so keep this in mind. If you are looking for a fine-dining experience look elsewhere - just keeping your expectations in check.
What I enjoyed most about Jaathra at Barkly was the warm, easygoing atmosphere. Some restaurants can feel stressful with children under 10, but this felt comfortable and relaxed, which is exactly what I look for when choosing a family restaurant in West Footscray. The setting works well for a casual weeknight dinner, a low-key weekend meal, or a catch-up with friends when you want good food without too much fuss. It has that simple local charm that makes Barkly Street restaurants so appealing.
The food here seems really authentic with a multitude of Indian customers implying that it must be good. This is my own interpretation but it seems solid to me. Anyway, I liked that the menu seems slightly different from most generic Indian restaurants you come across.
The food at Jaathra is full of rich, comforting flavours, with plenty to enjoy whether you are a confident spice lover or someone who prefers milder dishes. For families, this is always a big plus because everyone can find something that suits their taste. I liked that the meal felt generous and satisfying without being overly complicated. For anyone looking for flavour-packed dining in West Footscray, Jaathra at Barkly is a lovely place to add to the list.
It seems that Jaathra at Barkly is focussed on no fuss every person kind of food. I'm not Indian but I really enjoyed the food on offer here as well as enjoying the buzz and a bit of people watching.
As a parent, I also notice the little things: whether the children are comfortable, whether the food arrives in a family-friendly way, and whether the overall experience feels easy. Jaathra at Barkly worked well for us because it felt casual, welcoming and unpretentious. It is the sort of West Footscray restaurant where you can enjoy a proper meal while still feeling relaxed with young kids at the table, which is honestly worth gold when dining out as a family as well as not feeling uncomfortable if the kids get a bit over the top.
Overall Jaathara at Barkly is just a great lovely budget option and we always need a few of these up our sleeves with the general cost of living crisis.
I always love a mango lassi. Maybe not the best ever but this is a value dining venue so I was more than happy.
Value is in the eye of the beholder but I truly believe that Jaathara at Barkly delivers on this while managing to provide a nice dining experience. Gotta love that.
Location

In A Nutshell
Jaathara at Barkly is a favourite cheap eats venue for us. Worth searching out if you like inexpensive and good value for place venues. It all tastes good too otherwise what's the point of eating out.
Hard at work punters (see image below). Ha ha.

Moon Dog Wild West
Moon Dog Brewery meets the wild west. Giant cacti, ride the bull arena, Mexican and western pub food, three level venue. Eccentric, loud, vibrant and making a statement in the West. Highly recommended if you love your pubs.

Huu Huu Thanh
It goes without saying that we highly recommend Huu Huu Thanh. A full and complete Vietnamese menu, a down to earth yet still decorative restaurant environment, fantastic flavoured food and a pumping vibrant atmosphere. Hawker styled food done fantastically.

Back Alley Sally's
Back Alley Sally's is probably missed out by visitors to Footscray who don't venture far from the main shopping and dining district. First Taste
First Taste restaurant is an adequate Cantonese styled restaurant. It's former claim to fame was it's specialty Cantonese soups that maintained an authentic flavour that tasted great. I am hoping they can return to their former glory days again.

It's great to have a Filipino restaurant in Footscray but it just wasn't our cup of tea. Still if you crave some Filipino food this might fill the spot for you.

T. Cavallaro & Sons Pasticceria
T Cavallaro and Sons Pasticceria offers a view to a long gone Italian heritage in the heart of Footscray. Definitely worth a visit to consider buying some Italian coffee equipment or trying the ricotta cannoli from a recipe over 150 years old!

Hong Kong BBQ
The Hong Kong BBQ restaurant has gone from all time favourite to okay. Hong Kong BBQ has drastically reduced its menu to only BBQ'd Chinese food now. So yes you can continue to enjoy your favourite roast duck or roast pork but sadly the reduced menu is a bit of a let down. Still, if you love your roast duck it is perfect as a takeaway treat or you can still eat it there.
