Golden Horse Seafood & BBQ Restaurant in Footscray has always been a favourite of ours and when it shutdown in 2023 with no indication of when it would re-open it was a sad moment.
With the decline of the Hong Kong BBQ restaurant across the road, a great Cantonese style food establishment was sadly missing in Footscray. Happily Golden Horse Seafood are back in action.

Golden Horse Seafood & BBQ Restaurant offers a pretty complete Cantonese styled menu although we usually come for yum cha so you could say we are self-limiting.

Anyway, this means you have anything from congee (rice porridge), a range of egg noodle soups (hor fun), roast meats such as roast pork, bbq pork, soya sauce chicken, roast duck with rice or noodles, many rice dishes as mains with seafood, combination, minced beef and egg, beef and tomatoes, hokkien styled fried rice plus lots, lots more.

It's always a bit of a fear that when living in the suburbs you miss out on all the good food and in the case of Chinese food this is often the case.

However Golden Horse Seafood & BBQ Restaurant rises above and is the equal if not better than many CBD Chinese restaurants. We don't feel we are missing out at all coming here for yum cha and in fact appreciate the larger servings than average compared to inner city restaurants.

Of course quantity is no substitute for quality and we'd only come back here again if we actually enjoyed the food. Anyway, despite not living in Footscray we come back again and again to Golden Horse Seafood & BBQ Restaurant because we love it so much. Yes, Golden Horse Seafood is really great.

Another fear of dining at a suburban restaurant is a limited menu. Anyway, as far as yum cha goes the selection of dumplings and dim sum is really very extensive so you should be able to find most if not all of your favourites here.

For the uninitiated you could find a few strange or seemingly non-appealing items on the menu. I am thinking chicken feet with black beans or ginger shallots tripe. Personally I find their chicken feet one of my favourites and I am glad that the ginger shallots tripe is on the menu to try every now and again.

There are the typical dumplings you'll find pretty much everywhere such as prawn dumplings (hargow), pork dumplings (suimai), scallop and prawn dumplings, chicken glutinous rice, beancurd skin roll, steam rice roll with prawns, bbq pork buns and more.

The decor at Golden Horse Seafood & BBQ Restaurant is apr the course with it being a fairly typical Chinese restaurant with minimal decorative touches and little unique character.
Still in standard Chinese restaurant tradition quality is measured in either value for money or the quality of the food. Happily Golden Horse Seafood & BBQ Restaurant is a winner in both columns.

In A Nutshell

An extensive menu, great pricing and service and reliable high quality and tasting food makes Golden Horse Seafood & BBQ Restaurant easy to recommend.

First Taste
First Taste restaurant is an adequate Cantonese styled restaurant. It's former claim to fame was it's specialty Cantonese soups that maintained an authentic flavour that tasted great. I am hoping they can return to their former glory days again.

Hong Kong BBQ
The Hong Kong BBQ restaurant has gone from all time favourite to okay. Hong Kong BBQ has drastically reduced its menu to only BBQ'd Chinese food now. So yes you can continue to enjoy your favourite roast duck or roast pork but sadly the reduced menu is a bit of a let down. Still, if you love your roast duck it is perfect as a takeaway treat or you can still eat it there.
