The bakery sits on Heathcote's main street and is open seven days, making it practical for weekend drives and winery trips. Gaffney's Bakery offers up classic pies, vanilla slice, coffee and broad display of savoury and sweet bakery favourites.
What to Eat at Gaffney's Bakery
Pies are the obvious starting point. The bakery has built a strong reputation around traditional Australian bakery food, and visitors regularly highlight savoury pies alongside cakes and slices. If you are stopping for breakfast, brunch or lunch, there are also rolls, sandwiches and other bakery-style options. We bought a vanilla slice, passionfruit tart and a giant family cherry and apple pie. Sorry, I can't comment on a meat pie but they were tempting.

I'm a sucker for a vanilla slice, it's basically my go to so I had to try it at Gaffney's. Well, to be honest it wasn't the best ever, not bad but not great either. However, weekend travel trips aren't necessarily about perfection. I'd say just take it as it is and enjoy being in the holiday spirit.

Heathcote is much more than a lunch stop. The region is famous for shiraz, with cellar doors dotted through the surrounding countryside, while Pink Cliffs Reserve, the O'Keefe Rail Trail and Lake Eppalock add walking, cycling and outdoor options. That makes Gaffney's Bakery an easy place to build into a full day exploring Heathcote rather than treating the town as somewhere to simply drive through.
My Kind of Weekend Food Stop
I am on a low carb routine during the week, but the weekend is when I give myself a little freedom. A country bakery is exactly the sort of place that can test that discipline. There is something wonderfully uncomplicated about choosing a pie or a slice, finding a seat and enjoying the break before getting back on the road.
It also fits one of my favourite travel lessons from the story bank: make the effort to get into country Victoria and you often discover food, wine and places you would never have found by staying on the obvious route.
It may seem a bit odd having Brunetti styled birthday cakes for sale but I say why not. The locals have to celebrate as well!

Is Gaffney's Bakery Worth Visiting?
If you enjoy classic country bakeries, Gaffney's is an easy recommendation to consider while visiting Heathcote. Its central location, seven-day trading and wide bakery selection make it particularly convenient for travellers. Pair the stop with Pink Cliffs, a Heathcote shiraz cellar door or a stretch of the O'Keefe Rail Trail and you have the makings of an awesome Central Victoria day trip.
Gaffney's also manage to offer retro biscuit tins, and their own sauces and preserves and Brunetti styled birthday cakes. It's quite a nice mix. While you could argue it's an eclectic mix of modern, retro and corporate it's just nice having a bakery to visit if you fell like a coffee or crave a pie, cake or dessert. Perhaps they could go full retro mode but then it might feel a bit dowdy so I'm pretty happy with the mix.
Trivia: Gaffney's describes itself as a family-run business established in 1996. The business now operates the Heathcote bakery as well as Gaffney's Pie Kitchen in Seymour.

Gaffney's Bakery is at 63-65 High Street, Heathcote VIC 3523, in the centre of Heathcote. From Melbourne, drive north toward Heathcote via the Northern Highway. From Flinders Street Station, allow roughly 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours by car depending on traffic and your route.

- Good base: Heathcote, for direct access to the bakery, local wineries, Pink Cliffs and walking trails.

I'm glad that Gaffney's Bakery opens until 4PM. I have to wonder about the viability and custom after 3PM so I really appreciated them being open at this time, especially on the weekend when they must get more holiday makers visiting Heathcote.
Cost
At per most countryish locations expect pricing to be better than in Melbourne or nearby Bendigo. I was pretty happy with the pricing and also bought a giant cherry and apple pie to heat up at home. Food, coffee, cakes, pies and other products are individually priced.
