If there’s one place in Point Cook that has firmly secured its reputation for serving soul-satisfying South Indian food, it’s Dosa Hut. Known for its crispy paper-thin dosas, aromatic biryanis and warm hospitality, Dosa Hut is the kind of restaurant that instantly makes you feel at home. With kids in tow and even Tommy the Labrador waiting for leftovers at home, this outing promised to be an adventure for the taste buds.
The menu here is an exciting journey through South Indian favourites, from masala dosas stuffed with spiced potatoes to idlis so soft they practically melt in your mouth. My daughter giggled as she tried tearing a dosa longer than her arm, while my son debated whether the chicken biryani or goat curry was the true winner of the night. It reminded me of a story from my wine journey – how food, just like wine, becomes more meaningful when shared with loved ones.
What stood out most at Dosa Hut Point Cook is how everything feels authentic without being intimidating. The staff are always ready to guide you, much like a winemaker chatting about their craft. While this is a chain store it still manages to have some character and charm so it still feels kinda special. Not mega special but definitely better than most chain stores plus for us at least the custommer service was exemplary!
The food itself is consistently impressive. The dosas arrive perfectly crisp, the chutneys tangy and refreshing, and the biryanis aromatic with just the right amount of heat. For dessert, the kids devoured gulab jamun with sticky fingers and big smiles. I couldn’t help but think how, much like supporting local wineries, coming to a place like Dosa Hut means you’re supporting passionate people bringing a slice of their culture to our community.
If you like your samosa then Dosa Hut could be the palce for you. Theones here were perhaps the best I've ever haad and if not they weree certainly cooked to perfection. Highly recommended!
Dining at Dosa Hut also reminded me of one of those unexpected wine tasting moments. Just as a winery dog can make you smile and feel welcome, here it was the joyful atmosphere – families laughing, friends celebrating, and the scent of spices filling the air – that made the night special. It’s not just about food, it’s about the energy of people coming together. It's a testament to Dosa Hut's quality that there seemed to be quite a few Indian customers here when we visited meaning the quality can't be too bad.
If you like your beer Dosa Hut is pretty keenly priced as well which is a nice little bonus!
The restaurant’s Point Cook location makes it an easy dinner stop after a busy weekend. It’s casual enough for kids to enjoy, yet delivers dishes bold enough to impress even the most seasoned foodie. For my family, it’s become one of those “golden” spots – like a favourite song you play on repeat because it never loses its charm. Speaking of songs, the atmosphere had the same energy as a live Killers gig – upbeat, communal, and just a little bit cheeky.
On the practical side, the servings are generally generous (the tandoori chicken serving could be bigger), prices are reasonable, and service is consistently warm. Parking nearby is simple, which is always a blessing when wrangling two kids who are more excited about gulab jamun than getting in and out of the car. Dosa Hut Point Cook proves that authentic South Indian food doesn’t have to be a trek into the city – it’s right here in Melbourne’s west, ready for families, friends and even fussy eaters to enjoy.
Every visit has left us not just full but also smiling, with conversations that linger long after the plates are cleared. That’s the beauty of places like this – they connect food, culture, and family in the most delicious way. This is kind of a perfect budget eat particularly if you are non-Indian. By that I mean making my own Indian curry seems a step beyond for me so I always eat out for Indian food and Dosa Hut Point Cook is an easy recommend.
Bonus points to Dosa Hut for embedding some Indian and Indian-Australian history into the tables for visitors to learn some Indian and Australian history and culture while you are here.
Trivia: The dosa is believed to have originated over 1,500 years ago in South India, making it one of the world’s oldest fermented foods still enjoyed today.
