The Redwoods History

The Redwoods in the Otways, Victoria, represent a fascinating chapter in Australia's botanical and cultural history. These majestic Sequoia sempervirens, or Coast Redwoods, were planted between 1929 and 1936 as part of an experimental forestry trial. The intention behind this trial was to explore the viability of these giants for light construction, durable cladding, and roofing materials.

Despite the slow initial growth, the specific conditions of the Aire Valley—characterized by high rainfall, fertile soil, cool climate, and summer fogs—mirrored the native environment of these trees in California, allowing them to thrive.

Over the decades, the Redwoods have shown remarkable growth, transforming from mere seedlings to towering giants that now stand over 60 meters tall. This growth trajectory suggests that they have the potential to reach heights rivaling or even surpassing their Californian counterparts in the future.
