Rolling into Moonambel with the kids chatting in the back and my playlist wandering from Lana Del Rey to The Killers, Grape Farm Winery already feels like the weekend breakout I needed. The setting is pure Pyrenees calm with gentle hills and a cellar door that feels handcrafted and all heart. From the first hello you sense this is a place where time slows and the glass in your hand has a real story to tell.

I always say the best part of a tasting is the chat. Here the conversation flows easily and before you know it you are swapping food ideas, hearing tiny details about the season, even getting tips on nearby walks. It is that lovely ripple you get at the most welcoming cellar doors where you learn something new and leave with more than a bottle. Every visit is unique and that is the magic I keep chasing.
Wine wise the reds show real Pyrenees muscle with a full bodied shiraz that loves slow cooked lamb and a cabernet with shape and polish. Whites are bright and clean which makes them perfect with roast chicken or a simple cheese board while the kids tuck into hot chips. I aim to be careful sipper and usually the designated driver so I pace myself and savour (as best I can). One glass, great conversation, golden memories.

There is a beautiful underdog spirit here. Small team, big dreams, generous hospitality. As someone who loves cheering for the not so obvious choice, I adore how Grape Farm turns quiet confidence into an awesome experience. It is not flashy. It is genuine. If boutique wineries had a GOAT for heart and soul, this place would be in the final.
Practical tip from a mum who plans weekends like tour dates. Leave early, map your stops, and treat the driver to brunch so everyone stays happy. Moonambel makes a super base with other favourites close by, and the countryside is tailor made for short strolls so the kids can stretch. Tommy our Labrador would happily approve of all the fresh air and the picnic lawns too.
Trivia time. Grape Farm Winery was established in 1976 and sits in a natural amphitheatre above the Moonambel valley. The vineyard grows a wide mix that includes shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, malbec, riesling, sauvignon blanc, semillon, pinot noir, cabernet franc and chardonnay, with newer plantings of nebbiolo, sangiovese and viognier. The name Moonambel is widely believed to come from an Aboriginal phrase that means hollow in the hills, and the wider Pyrenees took its name in 1836 when Major Thomas Mitchell thought these Victorian ranges looked like their European namesake.
