Avalon Beach Victoria: A Quiet Coastal Escape Near Lara and the You Yangs
Looking for a peaceful beach near Lara, Geelong and the You Yangs? Avalon Beach on the northern shore of Corio Bay offers a wonderfully different kind of Victorian coastal outing. Think tidal sand flats, fishing shacks, birdlife and big open skies rather than surf, crowds and beachside cafes. It's a lovely addition to a relaxed weekend exploring Melbourne's west.
The absolute highlight of visiting Avalon Beach are the beautiful views of the You Yangs that you do not get from other vantage points. This makes it a surprisingly good photographing location.
Why Visit This Hidden Corner of Corio Bay?
Avalon Beach is all about slowing down. The shoreline faces south across Corio Bay, with little jetties, rock groynes and weathered coastal buildings creating an atmospheric landscape. At low tide, exposed sand flats make the scenery feel almost endless. Bring your camera and a little patience, because the changing light is half the fun.
For photography lovers like me, the real gamechanger is the sense of space. Wide-angle coastal compositions work beautifully here, while a longer lens helps you observe birds without getting too close. This is not a manicured resort beach, and that's precisely its charm.
Birdwatchers should keep an eye out for migratory shorebirds during the warmer months. The Geelong Field Naturalists Club describes a 1.7-kilometre return birding walk around Avalon Beach, taking approximately 50 minutes, with low tide recommended for shorebird viewing. Stay on permitted tracks, avoid disturbing feeding birds and give wildlife plenty of room.
If you enjoy a little local history, look beyond the water. The old saltworks landscape and nearby saltmarsh habitats are important parts of this coastline. Avalon Coastal Reserve offers a more secluded walking and birdwatching experience, although it has separate access rules and fewer facilities than the council-managed beach.
Avalon Beach is also a practical spot for fishing and small-boat access. The City of Greater Geelong lists a boat ramp and public toilets, and notes that shallow water and exposed sand flats make the ramp better suited to smaller boats. Check the tide, weather and boating conditions before heading out.
I always think the best weekend discoveries happen when you leave a little space in your itinerary. That reminds me of my trip to the Ballarat International Foto Biennale, when an unexpected photography trail led me into the Pyrenees for scenery, food and winery discoveries. Avalon Beach has that same potential as a starting point for exploring somewhere new, even if the outing is simply about enjoying the coast.
Pair your Avalon Beach stop with a walk in the You Yangs Regional Park or a visit to Serendip Sanctuary near Lara. That gives you an awesome mix of coastline, granite hills and wildlife in one day. Finish with a cafe stop in Lara or Geelong and you've got a simple, satisfying Victorian weekend adventure.
Fishing Spot at Point Lillias
It seems that Point Lillias a short walk from Avalon Beach waterfront is a not so hidden fishing spot. There is a non-stop flow of fisherman and women walking to and from Point Lillias. Given the commitment with several people bringing along their fishing trolleys with stacks of fishing equipment it would seem on the surface that Point Lillias is a great fishing spot.
Now we didn't stay long enough to see anyone catch a thing but given the sheer quantity of fishermen it does seem it must be a great fishing spot. Also, the ocean views from Point Lillias are somewhat superior to that from Avalon Beach proper as all the industrial plants in Geelong are thankfully out of sight. The nice ocean views are enough to recommend the walk to Point Lillias from Avalon Beach proper if the weather is in your favour.
Avalon Beach Trivia: Scenes from the original Mad Max film were shot around Avalon Beach, according to Avalon Airport's local visitor guide. The beach also sits beside former salt pans and significant saltmarsh vegetation.
