Summerfield Winery in Moonambel is pure Pyrenees comfort with a focus on generous red wines and friendly country hospitality. The setting is relaxed among native gardens where tastings feel personal and never rushed which makes it easy to slip into weekend mode. If you love a full bodied style this is a destination that rewards the trip with depth in the glass and warmth in the welcome.
The cellar door vibe is easy going and informative with staff keen to share stories of the site and the craft. Conversations wander from vineyard blocks to vintage character which is exactly why I adore visiting regional producers. It is that human touch that lifts a tasting from a list of wines to a memory that you keep long after the last sip.
Food here is a drawcard. Wood fired pizzas arrive with a crisp base and generous toppings that make perfect partners for the house style. Add stone baked artisan sourdough that tastes like it just walked out of a country oven and you have the makings of a long lazy lunch. Settle in under the trees with a glass of shiraz and it feels like the countryside is giving you a hug.
My own wine journey leans to richer reds and Summerfield hits that sweet spot. The shiraz shows dark fruit and spice with satisfying weight while cabernet brings length and structure. It is the kind of line up that reminds me of spinning a favourite album from Radiohead where layers reveal themselves with every listen. Confident and comforting at the same time which is my kind of weekend treat.
Beyond the glass the setting makes it easy to slow down. Rolling hills and quiet roads set a peaceful rhythm that suits family time and a mindful reset. Visiting cellar doors also supports small Australian businesses in country towns which means every tasting helps the local economy to thrive. That is a win for your taste buds and for the region.
Trivia time. Summerfield has a long history in the Pyrenees with vineyards established in the late nineteen seventies and a reputation for traditional methods with minimal intervention. Cellar door tastings run daily during the day and the kitchen serves wood fired pizza for lunch from mid week through the weekend with dinner on select evenings which makes it easy to plan a visit that mixes great food with a flight of bold reds.
