French Impressionism Exhibition 2025 at NGV Melbourne - Must See Art Showcase

The NGV French Impressionism Exhibition 2025 is an absolute must-see for art lovers, history buffs, and anyone looking for a vibrant cultural experience in Melbourne. Held at the iconic National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), this exhibition showcases an unforgettable collection of French Impressionist masterpieces from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Presentation: The NGV have really gone all in with the presentation of the French Impressionism Exhibition. This is truly an immersive exhibition and the rooms displaying the artworks are all formally decorated. You would be forgiven for thinking you are viewing the paintings in a royal palace or a rich aristocrat of the time such is the attention to detail and effort with ornate curtains, faux windows and embossed walls.

As soon as you step into the gallery, you're transported to the golden age of French art. The warm brushstrokes of Monet, the dreamy scenes of Renoir, and the luminous landscapes of Sisley set the tone for a journey through one of the most influential movements in art history. It’s a visually rich experience that captures the essence of Impressionism in Melbourne.

Education: The exhibition highlights over 100 stunning works, many of which have never before been shown in Australia. The curation is superb, offering insightful context on how these artists broke away from tradition to embrace light, color, and everyday life. It's a perfect blend of education and inspiration, ideal for both art aficionados and first-time visitors to the NGV.

If you are the type of person wanting an educational experience there is plenty of informational plaques to read. While for many others like myself, I might read a few and am more than happy view, gaze and appreciate looking at the art on display and just enjoying the paintings at an emotional level.

One of the standout features of the 2025 NGV French Impressionist exhibition is the immersive layout. Each room flows naturally into the next, leading you through key phases of the Impressionist movement. Interactive displays and multimedia installations bring the stories behind the paintings to life, creating a deeper connection with the art on display.

Don't miss the captivating Monet Japanese bridge, with Monet always being a crowd favourite. Seeing it in person is a breathtaking experience. The gallery’s lighting and spacious design allow the colors to pop and create a serene atmosphere that mirrors the tranquility of the French countryside depicted in so many of the works.

I'm no expert on the different styles within impressionism however there is definitely variety wthin the genre. I particularly enjoyed the dotty sytle used by Camille Pissaro in "Spring Pasture". While I probably couldn't stand every painting using this style, in limited dosages I think they really stand out. I can imagine painting them with this style might drive you batty though.

A common type of painting has always been still life. As a New Order music buff I always notice paintings by Henri Fantin-Latour. The Power, Corruption and Lies album being one of my favourites, I digress. Anyway, while I am certainly not knowledgeable on Fantin-Latour's resume the "Roses In A Vase" is definitely in the vain from the New Order album cover and is very distinctive. It would be interesting to know what you think of Henri Fantin-Latour's paintings if you have no background knowledge or affiliation with his work.

Naughtical: While sail ships and naughtical paintings will likely leave some people stone cold it is a definite theme within the exhibition. While not my favourite subject it is still interesting from a historical perspective and for some people is bound to be a highlight.

People Watching: For some people it's interesting to people watch. How has fashion changed? What is similar and just in general what did people wear and what colours were popular? Even hairstyles, facial hair, hats, heights and waistlines of people. The list goes on and it can be fascinating seeing an era that is both distant and also not that far ago at the same time.

The Crowds: I have to admit we went on the first weekend so maybe that was the cause of the giant crowd. Anyway, I do suggest you try and arrive as early as possible in the morning and maybe late afternoon if you want to enjoy a smaller crowd and a bit more space to appreciate the art. I know people were justifiably excited but cramped spaces do reduce the enjoyment somewhat. Anyway, given that the exhibition is on for an extended period of time the early rush has probably passed and hopefuuly you'll be okay when you visit.
