Every spring, Bendigo comes alive with colour as more than 40,000 tulips bloom along Pall Mall and surrounding gardens. This annual Tulip Display has become a highlight of the season, drawing families, photographers and flower enthusiasts to wander among the spectacular carpets of colour. With my kids in tow and Tommy the Labrador happily sniffing around, it’s the perfect excuse for a spring outing in regional Victoria.

The tulips are planted in sweeping beds that follow different themes each year, making the display fresh and exciting even for regular visitors. Kids will love spotting tulips in every shade of the rainbow, while parents can admire the artistry and care that goes into creating this living artwork. It’s a true community celebration of spring, with Bendigo’s historic buildings providing a stunning backdrop.

One of my favourite memories is sitting on a bench under the autumn-style oaks while my children compared which tulip colours they loved the most. Tommy wagged his tail at every passerby, adding to the cheerful atmosphere. The joy of sharing a simple yet magical experience like this always reminds me of my favourite Blur lyric (anyone think "charmless man" is a dig at Liam Gallagher from Oasis? Hint - I do) — sometimes the best moments are the everyday ones. And honestly, much like a great wine tasting conversation I once had in Avoca, the tulip display invites strangers to chat, share smiles, and swap stories about their favourite blooms. Take the time to help someone take a selfie while you are here.

The Annual Tulip Display isn’t just about flowers, though. The event often coincides with the Bendigo Spring Festival, which means live music, markets, kids’ activities and delicious local food to enjoy. If you time your visit well, you can make a full day of it, soaking in both the vibrant floral displays and the buzz of festival energy around the city. It feels like the best kind of community concert, full of joy and connection—reminding me of that unexpected happiness I once felt at a Katy Perry show when the crowd broke into song before she even came on stage - yeah, A-ha blaring over the PA system does that.

Cherry blossoms too! Tulips are great and for many cherry blossoms are there equal. While you are here to enjoy the tulips why not take the opportunity to visit the Golden Dragon Museum garden where you can pretend to be in China. Here you'll be able to take some great cherry blossom portraits if you can avoid the crowds.

After you’ve taken in the tulips, Bendigo has plenty more to offer. The Central Deborah Gold Mine gives kids a hands-on history lesson, and the Bendigo Art Gallery is always worth a visit. Foodies can enjoy Bendigo’s thriving café scene or pick up local produce from markets nearby. For wine lovers like me, a short drive out will take you to some of the region’s celebrated wineries, blending nature and indulgence beautifully. A personal favourite is Balgownie Estate Bendigo, where you can sip award-winning shiraz while overlooking rolling vineyards—an indulgent way to end a flower-filled day.

If you’re looking for a simple yet unforgettable spring day out, the Bendigo Annual Tulip Display is one to add to your list. It’s a reminder that sometimes the best experiences don’t need to be complicated—they just need a splash of colour, a walk with loved ones and maybe even a wagging tail. Trivia: The Netherlands, famous for its tulips, actually introduced the first bulbs to Australia in the 19th century, laying the foundation for displays like Bendigo’s today.
