Augustus Gelatery in Werribee Melbourne Australia

Augustus Gelatery is a nice stylish gelatory, ice-cream, sorbet, cakes and milkshake establishment on the Watton high street in Werribee and other locations throughout Melbourne. I guess it's sad that it's a franchise but it's still great to have a gelatory in the heart of Werribee.

Augustus Gelatery is quite a stylish, trendy and cool looking place. When it first opened I was immediately thinking this place looks kinda cool. Okay as said above it's a franchise so it's coolness is to be debated but nevertheless Augustus Gelatery does look the part.

It goes without saying that Augustus Gelatery is from Italy or I more precisely is true artisan Italian inspired gelato.

Augustus Gelatery has quite an extensive menu. You can order cakes for a special occasion tanging from Bombe Alaska, Chocolate brownie, Nutella Choc Chip, Snickas and more. Not bad for a cake selection.

Augustus Gelatery has a super extensive seelction of gelato flavours so even the most fussy person is going to find something they like. Augustus Gelatery have everything from Black Forrest, Caramel Brownie, Bacio, Toasted Coconut and Passionfruit, Boysenberry Cheesecake, Peanut Butter Choc Chip Cookie Dough, Frozen Yoghurt & Strawberry, Bubble Gum, salted caramel and even more! That's just gelato.

Augustus Gelatery also has sorbets ranging from mixed berries, Raspberry, Pineapple and Lychee Sorbet, Lemon Sorbet, Green Apple Sorbet, Watermelon Sorbet and a few more flavours.

As for the milkshake menu, Augustus Gelatery has Mangos & Cream, Golden G’Time, Baileys Bomb, Bubble Gum, Nutela, Milo, summer fruit crush and more. Truly an extensive list of flavours and notably different from your traditional, chocolate, strawberry or banana.

Restaurant Review: Mama Lor (Werribee)

Mama Lor is a Filipino restaurant in Werribee that offers a variety of traditional Filipino dishes as well as their unique Spanish styled bread, cakes and treats.

Mama Lor is located on the Watton high street and is a nice modern, open and bright restaurant. I guess you could say it is bamboo inspired (at least colour wise). While brownish tones generally remind you of the 1970's and early 1980's the design really works for Mama Lor and it actually looks quite contemporary. Thumbs up for their interior design as this is quite an attractive restaurant.

Mama Lor has lots of unique dishes if you are not of Filipino descent or don't have Fiipino friends. This is one of the big selling points of Mama Lor as Filipino food just isn't that common. We have been to Mama Lor multiple times and it is always nice to have food that isn't so familiar.

The Mama Lor menu is very extensive and has an array of starters including Lumpiang Shanghai and Lumpiang Gulay (different types of spring rolls), eggplant salad (ensaladang talong), deep fried tofu and pork belly (tokwa't Baboy), Filipino fried chicken. They also have a number of vegetable dishes including pinakbet (mixed vegetables sauteed with shrimp paste), ampalaya, tortang talong (grilled eggplant salad) and more.

Mama Lor also has lots of great authentic Filipino mains including inihaw na liempo (charcoal grilled pork belly), bbq grilled pork skewers, lechon kawali (a classic pork belly dish deep fried until perfectly golden), kare kare, and cispy pata (pork hock bolied until tender then deep-fried until golden crisp). If you love pork then Mama Lor should be on the top of your list!

Mama Lor doesn't rest on its pork laurels and has plenty of seafood, chicken, soups, noodles, sizzling dishes and even a few seeming oddities like spaghetti pasta!. The Mama Lor menu really is very extensive and one of the best going around. We have only touched the surface here.

Mama Lor also has a huge and great range of freshly baked Spanish inpired cakes and breads you can buy takeaway. We've bought quite a few and it makes it a bit special buying that something on the way out or just by themselves. Hopia ube flaky pastry with purple yam is a classic as is hopia monggo (flaky pastry with mung beans). They also have torta cebuana (a sweet and tangy butter cake), ube pandesal and lots more).

In a nutshell

Mama Lor is one of the best restaurants in Werribee. From great modern distinctive interior design, an extensive selection of unique and great tasting Filipino cuisine, to freshly baked cakes and breads and a great vibe as they continue to be one of the busiest restaurants in Werribee, Mama Lor is definitely recommended.

Wyndham Art Prize 2023 Melbourne

Wyndham Art Prize 2023 had greater than 550 artworks submitted for the judges consideration. Of those, 71 were selected as finalists for 2023’s exhibition including nine local artists. Artworks included sculptures, paintings, drawings, ceramics, photography, video, prints, and many other distinctive creations.

The top award of the Wyndham Art Prize was created by Arrayah Loynd with the artwork an archival pigment print on cotton rag (Not pictured).

Wyndham Art Prize opening gala was on Wednesday 16 August and the artworks will remain on display until 22 October. It really is worth attending an opening gala to take in the atmosphere, meet a number of the artists and get a fuller appreciation of the artworks on display.

Wyndham Art Prize has a peoples choice award so if you have an entirely different taste than the judges you can participate and potentially reward another artist for their efforts.

The Wyndham Art Prize is held annually and we make an effort to attend the opening gala each year. I have to admit attendance seemed to be a bit down this year although it is probably an intangible as to what creates a crowd. Even so, for a week night during the winter period a great crowd still gathered.

Everybody has their own tastes so we do not try and indicate what we think are the best pieces of art. We all have our own life stories and what art connects with each individual is a personal experience. I personally enjoy something a bit unusual so the artwork with the fox or the bear with an axe kind of appeals to me.

Some people will enjoy the more traditional paintings or ceramics while that may leave others stone cold. There was a pretty good variety of art on display although arguably some of the political pieces verge on cliche. It is hard to communicate something in a nuanced and subtle way but in your face story-telling doesn't generally persuade people.

The Wyndham Art Prize is a showcase event so try and enjoy the artwork, ponder any messages the artist may be trying to communicate and just treasure the creativity and efforts of the artists who have participated. Their work is the communities gain.
